Orchestre LES KINGS

I am always amazed by the amount of modern bands that have been created during the 60s in Benin. Here is a living example with the obscure "Kings" band. I think the leader is Dossou Isaac aka Doslac who recorded several records with Poly-Rythmo orchestra. More surprisingly, Dossou Isaac recorded with the International Brothers which were Ebenezer Obey's band (Check it here).

Je suis toujours étonné par la quantité d'orchestres modernes qui se sont crées au Bénin à partir des années 60s. Voici un exemple vivant avec cet obscure orchestre Les Kings de Porto-Novo. Je pense que le leader de cet orchestre est Isaac Dossou alias Doslac, qui a enregistré plusieurs disques sur le même label avec l'orchestre Poly-Rythmo. Orquestra Afro Brasileira (1958)

Before leaving the old world I propose this great music coming from the new world. Oro insiders know already this album which success forced me to remove it from the blog. Once again the first recording of Orquestra Afro Brasileira. Exceptional Brazilian and world musical heritage.

The band was born in 1942. They recorded only two albums in 1958 and 1968. During 30-years career, they only played hundred concerts. This first album foreshadows all Brazilian modern music. Afro Brasilera's charismatic leader is Abigail Moura who was the first artist to catch from Macumba music rituals rhythms and instruments such as:

Agôgô, Adêjà, Urucongo, Afoxê, Canza, Atabaques, Angona-Puita.

Abigail Moura was not initiated into African Orishas but he was proceeding Macumba or Candomble rituals before each concert. His music comes from ritual songs, African thythm, Jazz, brass band and much more. This extremely rare record is part of Brazil's greatest treasure.

Avant de quitter l'ancien monde je propose cette musique exceptionnelle venu du nouveau monde. Les initiés d'Oro savent que j'ai déjà posté ce disque et que son succès m'a obligé à le retirer. Une nouvelle fois, le premier enregistrement d'Orquestra Afro Brasileira, patrimoine de la musique brésilienne et patrimoine culturel mondial.

Cet orchestre est né en 1942, il a enregistré seulement deux albums en 1958, puis en 1968. En 30 ans de carrière, cet orchestre n'a joué que 100 concerts. Le premier album préfigure toute la musique moderne Brésilienne mais surtout toute sa Négritude. Son leader charismatique était Abigail Moura est le premier artiste a puiser dans les rituels Macumba des rythmes ou des instruments dont voici la liste:

Agôgô, Adêjà, Urucongo, Afoxê, Canza, Atabaques, Angona-Puita.

Abigail Moura n'était pas initié mais il procédait à des rituels Macumba ou Candomble avant chaque concert. De sa musique ressort un mélange extraordinaire de chants rituels, de rythmes africains, de jazz, de brass band et plus encore. Ce disque extrêmement rare fait parti des plus grandes richesses du Brésil.

El Rego & Son Ensemble Typique (1968)

El Rego recorded this EP around 1968. It is significant because it contains three titles with different styles and rhythms. I personally like bluesy "Bambino-Blue". This record has already been posted in 2009 on Worlservice and I think its vinyl's quality is better. It is up to you.

El Rego a du enregistré ce disque vers 1968. Il est très appréciable car les trois morceaux qu'il contient ont chacun leur propre styles. J'aime personnellement le blues de "Bambino-Blue". Ce disque a déjà été posté en 2009 sur Worldservice et je pense que la qualité de son vinyle est meilleure. C'est à vous de juger.

LUCKY PEOPLE CENTER INTERNATIONAL feat. Danialou Sagbohan

I want to share this film, produced in 1998, for two reasons. The first is that Danialou Sagbohan participated in the shooting and his music has an important place in the film. You can recognize him on the picture, in a blue suit, in front of his battery of traditional percussions.

The second reason is that this film has changed my editor's life. Director, Joahn Soderberg is simply a genius of editing. He is the precursor of "mashup" which consists in composing a melody with pre-existing images and sounds.I also invite you to discover the fabulous tv-channel of master Johan Soderberg.

L'homme Orchestre: Danialou Sagbohan

Je voudrais partager ce film, produit en 1998, pour deux raisons. La première est que Danialou Sagbohan a participé au tournage et que sa musique a une place importante dans le film. Ci-joint une photo de Sagbohan en costume bleu devant sa batterie de percussions traditionnelles.

La deuxième raison est que ce film a changer ma vie de monteur. Le réalisateur, Johan Soderberg est tout simplement un génie du montage. Il est le précurseur du "mashup" qui consiste à composer une mélodie avec des images et des sons pré-existants. Je vous invite à découvrir l'extraordinaire chaine télé du maitre Johan Soderberg.

Orchestre DIAMANT NOIR

I would like to thank Ogoun Ferraille for sharing with us this previously unknown "Diamant Noir" band on Oro blogpsot. As often in Benin music discography, I don't have any informations about the band and still less about the composer: Elzo Malta.

I know that "Bohicon" is a famous town next to Abomey, the Dahomey kingdom's capital. This 7 inches vinyl is excellent, especially side 1 with "Lo Re Ekou" title which is a dangerous Sato rhythm.

Je remercie Ogoun Ferraille pour avoir partagé avec nous cet orchestre Diamant Noir, inconnu auparavant dans la discographie du blog Oro. Le compositeur se nomme Elzo Malta et comme souvent au Bénin, je n'ai pas d'informations sur cet artiste et encore moin sur l'orchestre "Diamant Noir du Bohicon". 

Bohicon est une ville carrefour entre Cotonou et Abomey, la capitale du royaume du Dahomey. Ce 45 tours des années 70's est exceellent, surtout la face A, avec le titre "Ekou Lo Re" qui est un redoutable rythme Sato. 

Chief Fasco Dagama & His Super Performers (Nigeria/1979)

Chief Fasco Dagama may be from Nigeria or Benin his juju music album edited on Beninese Albarika Store label remains excellent. Gangan or talking-drum lovers will be delighted.
I think comment from Reservatory resumes perfectly this album:

"This one's still on rotation. I hear bits of Alhadji Haruna Ishola and gamelan in the rhythm, but the guitars really take it somewhere else. Polytonality, microtonality or faulty tuning, I can't get enough whatever it is. And does his name reference Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama? Thanks again for this treasure."

Chief Fasco Dagama peut être Nigerian ou Béninois, son album de Juju music édité sur le label Béninois Albarika Store reste excellent. Les amateurs de tambour Gangan ou "talking drum" seront enchantés.
Je pense que ce commentaire de Resevatory résume parfaitement cet album:

Stanley Murphy & Les Grand Columbias du Peuple (Côte d'Ivoire/1979)

I love Stanley Murphy's music, especially with Grands Columbias du Peuple's famous backing band which also recorded with Okoi Seka Athanase. I also love the cover of this 1979's album. I have dreamed seeing this electric artist in concert.

Orchestre de la Paillote (Guinea/1967)

I can't resist posting this second album from "Orchestre de la Paillote" led by Kelitigui Traore and recorded in 1967. The vinyl is currently for sale on ebay by "surely burli".

Je ne resiste pas au plaisir de poster ce deuxième album de l'orchestre de la Paillote dirigé par Keletigui Traore, enregistré en 1967. Le vinyl est actuellement en vente sur ebay par "surely burli".

Orchestre LES TROUBADOURS DE OUIDAH (1969)

Elias Winsa was the leader of the "Troubadours de Ouidah", a popular orchestra from the sixties which had a short life. I think this recording is old, maybe 1969.

The album is a compilation of the their best tunes. Some of the songs are not linked because they figure on the following 7 inches, and in a much better shape.

Elias Winsa était le leader et bassiste de l'orchestre des Troubadours des Ouidah. Un orchestre populaire durant les années soixante, mais qui eut une courte vie. Je pense que cet enregistrement sur label Discafric est vieux, peut-être 1969.

L'album est une compilation des meilleurs titres du groupe. Certains morceaux ne sont pas dans le lien car ils figurent sur le 45 tours qui suit et qui sont de bien de bien meilleure qualité.

Traore Seydou Michel & LES VAUDOU DU FLAMBOYANT (Burkina-Faso/1974)

In 1966, in Bobo Dioulasso, Voltaïque city, rose for the first time on stage, a 14 years old boy, performing beautifully, in english, rhythm & blues songs. He was Seydou Traore Richard.

In 1974, he recorded his first record which serves as soundtrack for a movie he is main actor, "The Road of Reconciliation". On this recording, the backing band is the famous orchestra "Les Vaudou du Flamboyant".

En 1966, à Bobo Dioulasso, ville Voltaïque, montait pour la première fois sur scène, un jeune de 14 ans, interprétant merveilleusement, en anglais, des chansons de Rhythm & Blues. C'était Traore Seydou Richard.

En 1974, il enregistre son premier disque, qui sert de bande-son pour un film dont il est l'acteur principal, "Le Chemin de la Réconciliation". Sur cet enregistrement, il est accompagné d'un fameux groupe: l'orchestre Les Vaudou du Flamboyant.

Danialou Sagbohan (1982)

On this 1982 album, Sagbohan definitely finds his style, a popular style, traditional, jazz and latin. But Sagbohan is above all a voice, a poet who builds his music like theatre, in several heartbreaking rhythmic acts. The song "Alouwê" is one of my favorites, there is something special in the voice of this great artist.

Sur cet album de 1982, Sagbohan trouve définitivement son style, un style populaire, traditionnel, jazz et latin. Mais Sagbohan c'est avant tout une voix, un poète qui construit ses morceaux comme des pièces de théâtre, en plusieurs actes rythmiques déchirants. Le morceau "Alouwê" est l'un de mes préférés, il y a vraiment quelque chose de singulier chez cet artiste.

Orchestre BLACK SANTIAGO & Joachim Boya (1979)

Black Santiago is the oldest band in Benin. They have been created in 1964 and 1979 was one their best quality year of recordings. For example this album composed by Joachim Boya. I don't know him and I don't know who is singing, i am looking for... In any case the presence of Ignace de Souza on Saxophone and trumpet is a joyful. I understand why this great leader created afrobeat music.

L'orchestre Black Santiago a la plus grande longévité au Bénin puisqu'il il existe depuis 1964. L'année 1979 est un des meilleurs crus de l'orchestre avec notamment cet album composé par Joachim Boya, compositeur que je connais pas. Je ne sais pas qui chante sur cet album, je cherche... En tout cas la présence d'Ignace de Souza au saxophone et à la trompette est un pur régale, je comprends pourquoi ce grand chef d'orchestre a crée l'afrobeat.

New beninese band from the sixties, Orchestre Electro-Succès. The composer is Leon Houéssouvi and I discover the music as you.
The other side is played by National Jazz band, another band much more successful.

STAR TIME AZIZA (Togo/1970)

I think many of you will enjoy this compilation of Togolese music which contains many stars such as divas Bella Bellow (produced by Manu Dibango) or Julie Akoussah, but especially Roger Damahouzan  and his famous hit "Wait for me". Strange appearance on this compilation: Le Super Boboto band from Congo-Brazzaville. If anyone knows why?

Danialou Sagbohan (1977)

Sagbohan is such listened in his country that it is difficult to find vinyl copies in good shape. I offer you a new copy of his first album on label Badmos.

The famous title "Foutou Bananas" made Sagbohan become famous throughout all west Africa because, first, it is sung in french but mostly because "foutou banana" is a well known Ivorian recipe.

The song "Cocorico" is a hit in Benin, it is part of musical heritage and has been also recorded with poly-rythmo orchestra.

Finally "Dago le Karateka" is a complex tune playing it on guitar, anyway it's performed by fabulous congolese guitarist Louis Wasson who also recorded his album with Sagbohan on drums. I invite you to discover it here.

Il est difficile de trouver des bonnes copies de Sagbohan tellement il est écouté dans son pays. Je vous propose une nouvelle copie de son premier album sur le label Badmos.

Le fameux titre "Foutou Bananas" l'a fait connaitre dans toute l'Afrique de l'ouest parce qu'il est chanté en français mais surtout parce que le "foutou banana" est une recette de cuisine Ivoirienne très connue.

Vivi l'Internationle feat. Danialou Sagbohan (1990)

Victorine Agbato called Vivi l'Internationale is a beninese singer who began his career during the late 70's. I think that this album dates from the early 90's is not a master piece but the song "Wa Yi Do" is interesting because Danialou Sagbohan is featuring in the choir and on percussion.

Egungun of Ouidah / Les Revenants de Ouidah (1976)

I know many of you like sacred music recordings such as Egungun masks. This record includes several songs from Egungun's repertory recorded by Djomakon band of Ouidah and his lead singer Adedjobi.

"Only the spirits that are specially prepared to be invoked and to materialize can receive the name of Egungun, Baba Egun. The main objective of the cult is to make visible the spirits of the ancestors which act as a link between the living and their forefathers. Thus, the Baba bring to their descenders and believers, their blessings and advice but can not be touched. The Egun must always remain seperated from the living."

Je sais que beaucoup d'entre vous appréciez les enregistrements de musique sacrée comme celle des masques Egungun. Ce disque regroupe plusieurs titres du répertoire des Egungun enregistrés par le groupe Djomakon de Ouidah et son chanteur Abédjobi.

"Seuls les esprits les esprits initiés à l'invocation et la matérialisation peuvent prendre le titre d'Egungun. L'objectif principal du culte est de rendre visibles les esprits des ancêtres qui agissent comme un lien entre les vivants et les morts. Ainsi, l'Egun apporte aux descendants et croyants, des bénédictions, des conseils mais il ne doit pas être touché. L'Egun doit toujours resté séparé des vivants.

Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe (1970)

Je suis un fan absolu de Stephen Osita Osadebe. J'ai lu quelque part qu'il aurait enregistré plus 500 morceaux. Je pense qu'on ne connait pas encore toute sa musique.
En attendant voici un 33 tours de 1970.

Le commandant en chef Stepen Osita Osadebe et ses NIgerian Sound Makers sont des vétérans de la scène musicale Nigeriane. Leur musique a souvent fait sensation. Le succès d'Osadebe en tant que compositeur et musicien est due à son originalité mais aussi à son grand sens de l'humour. Avant de former les Nigerian Sound Makers, Osadebe a joué pendant longtemps en tant que compositeur et chanteur avec le légendaire Zeal Onyia.   Alex Peters

I am an absolute fan of Stephen Osita Osadebe. I read somewhere that he recorded over 500 songs. I think we still do not know all his music yet. Until that here is an LP recorded in 1970.

The Commander-in-chief, Stephen Osita Osadebe and His Nigerian Sound Makers are veterans of the Nigerian musical scene. Their music has several times been the sensation of the musical panorama. Osadebe's success as a composer and musician has been due not only to his purely musical fantasy, but also to his down-to-earth sense of humour. Osadebe played music with the legendary Zeal Onyia for many years as a composer/vocalist before he formed the Nigerian Sound Makers.   Alex Peters

Orchestre BLACK DRAGONS de Porto-Novo

Orchestre Black Dragons de Porto-Novo deserves a special post. The band takes its name from the football team called 'Dragons of Oueme" and was founded by famous singer, composer and saxophonist Nestor Hountondji. Later the band became Les Sympathics de Porto-Novo previously posted here.

L'orchestre Black Dragons de Porto-Novo mérite un courrier special. Ce groupe tire son nom de l'équipe de de football "Les Dragons de l'Oueme" et a été fondé par le célèbre  chanteur et saxophoniste Nestor Hountondji. Par la suite le groupe est devenu Les Sympathics de Porto-Novo que vous pouvez consultez ici.

The Black Dragons recorded their first songs in the late 60s in Nigeria on labels like Decca. This single has been released for the sale and distribution by the gaz company of Porto-Novo, Dahomey. As usual at this time: rumba rhythm...

Ce disque fut posté pour la première fois sur le blog Radiodiffuion Internasionaal. Le morceau "Se Djro" signe l'apparition des rythmes afrobeat dans la musique béninoise. 

This other record is my favourite. Always composed and sung by Nestor Hountondji, the titke "Amon Mi Keledje" is a marvel. On record's label, you can read "French" rhythm but it is a pure Beninese rhythm between jerk, afrobeat and fanfare.

Cet autre disque est mon préféré. Toujours composé et chanté par Nestor Hountondji, le titre "Amon Mi Keledje" est une pure merveille. Sur le label, vous pouvez lire rythme "français" mais c'est une pure rythme béninois entre Jerk, afrobeat et fanfare.

VOODOO: MOUNTED BY THE GODS

Long time ago that i wanted to share this movie with you. A documentary directed by famous switzerland photographer Alberto Venzago.
In 2000 I met him in Benin, he was shooting, like me, his documentary about voodoo religion. I was impressed by his story. He has been shooting for 10 years a child who was chosen to become a voodoo priest. Mighty and sublime film produced by Wim Wenders, written by Kit Hopkins and music by Jochen Schmidt-Hambrock.

Il y a longtemps que je voulais partager ce film avec vous. Un documentaire particulièrement bien réalisé par le grand photographe reporter Suisse, Alberto Venzago.

Au passage de l'an 2000, je l'ai rencontré au Bénin, il réalisait et cadrait, comme moi, un documentaire sur la religion vaudou. J'ai été impressionné par son histoire. Cela faisait 10 ans qu'il suivait un enfant promis au titre de prêtre vaudou. Un film puissant et sublime produit par Wim Wenders, écrit par Kit Hopkins et une musique de Jochen Schmidt-Hambrock.

Danialou Sagbohan (1978)

I posted this record two years ago, this other copy is better i think...

I have been looking after this great and rare record for a long time. It has been curiously found in Togo. This first own production from Sagbohan is gorgeous. The title "Viva Femme Africaine", that I personnally love, is totally unknown by Benin's audience. Danialou never plays it. "Nou Wame", was previously composed with Orchestre B.C.B. and it is also a fantastic tune. Enjoy this very rare record from 1978 and if someone has the sleeve, please, please send it to me...

J'ai cherché ce disque pendant longtemps. Bizarrement, il a été trouvé au Togo et donné par la personne qui le possédait. Cette première auto-production de Sagbohan est monumentale. Le titre "Viva Femme Africaine", que j'adore, n'est pas connu par l'audience Béninoise, Danialou ne le joue jamais. "Nou Wame" fut d'abord composé avec l'Orchestre de la B.C.B et c'est aussi un morceau d'anthologie. Apréciez ce disque rare de 1978 et si quelqu'un possède la pochette, je vous supplie de me l'envoyer...
