K. FRIMPONG & VIS-A-VIS (Ghana/1978)

Here is this the seriously rare album shared by Ogoun Ferraille. Thank you to him.
In the mid-70s, K. Frimpong recorded with two orchestras simultaneously. Let's begin with the Vis-A-Vis band. The first album was recorded in 1977 on the label Probisco Records (KBL 068). It has been reissued later on Makossa International Records (MA 7076). One of the best Vis-A-Vis album.

Vis-A-Vis was led by Isaac Yeboah, based in Kumasi and featuring some of the Ghana's finest musicians of the 70's: Sammy Cropper on lead guitar, Slim Yaw on bass and Kung-fu Kwaku on drums. This other album with Vis-A-Vis was recorded in 1978 on the label Ofori Brothers.
 

LES MESSAGERS DU BÉNIN (1978)

Excellent record of Les Messagers du Bénin on label Discafric. The band covered famous title "Nou Wa Me" from Danialou Sagbohan that you can find here or here. Side 2, also very good, with "Kou Ehou Issa" was composed by Janvier Kouazoti.

T.P. orchestre POLY-RYTHMO & Yehouessi Leopold (1978)

I think its is time to repost this fantastic LP of Poly-Rythmo. This opus was composed by drummer Leopold Yehouessi who had a huge influence on the band. He participated in the creation of the orchestra in 1965, then called Sunny Black's Band, and his death in 1982, as well as guitarist "Papillon" marks a halt to powerful Poly-Rythmo.

Je pense que c'est le temps de reposter ce sublime album du Poly-Rythmo. Cet opus a été Composé par le batteur, Léopold Yehouessi, qui avait une grande influence sur le groupe. SPECIAL POST: OGASSA (1978-2013)

This record was first released in 1978 on Albarika Store label and reissued on Hot Casa french label in 2013. I invite you to buy this fantastic and obscure record. Ogassa is a band from Porto-Novo, Benin. I never heard a beninese band with such a particular sound. I particularly like "Avale" which was originally composed by Danialou Sagbohan. The only information I have about the band is that  all the members died in a tragic car accident. This record is hugely rare, so buy it ! (Hot Casa Records).

Cet album fut édité sur le label Albarika Store en 1978. I a été réédité en 2013 par le label français Hot Casa. Je vous invite a acheter le disque de ce fantastique et obscure orchestre, Ogassa, qui vient de Porto-Novo, la capitale du Bénin. Ce groupe a un son très particulier. J'aime beaucoup le reprise de Danialou Sagbohan "Avale". La seule information que j'ai sur cet orchestre c'est que tous les membres sont morts dans un tragique accident de voiture. Cet album est extrêmement rare alors achetez le ! (Hot Casa Records)

Orchestre BLACK DRAGONS de Porto-Novo (1978)

I would like to thank Ogoun Ferraille for this wonderful black dragon's contribution. A very rare 10 inches record with the sleeve also. A post revolutionary recording from which "Yeni Houye" title is dedicated to  general Mathieu Kerekou. I love this tune.

Merci encore à Ogoun Ferraille pour cette dragonesque contribution. Un disque très rare  puisque c'est un 78 tours et avec la pochette en prime. Un enregistrement post revolutionnaire dont le titre "Yeni Houye" est un hommage au Général Kérékou. J'adore ce morceau.

LEON KEITA (Mali/1978)

Je pense qu'il était temps de réunir ces trois albums de Léon Keïta que j'avais posté il y a 4 ans et dont les liens sont "morts". Il est difficile de trouver des informations sur cet guitariste chanteur et compositeur mais ses enregistrements réservent plein de surprises. Ils ont tous été produits par des Béninois.

I think It is time to pile up these three records from guitarist, singer and composer Léon Keïta which links have been dead for a longtime. It's difficult to find informations about this artist but his recordings are full of surprises. His first records have all been edited by Beninese producers.

Le premier premier album est enregistré en 1978 par le célèbre producteur béninois Papa Disco. Léon Keita enregistre quatre titres avec l'orchestre Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux et deux duos avec Salif Keita sur "Koma Kouma" et "Wousse". Le titre "Chacun sa vie" est un cadeau afrobeat chanté en français et simplement prodigieux.

Le deuxième album de Léon Keïta est aussi enregistré sur le label Papa Disco en 1978. Je pense que c'est aussi l'orchestre des Ambassadeurs qui l'accompagne. La particularité de cet album est la présence au chant de Tom Diakite, célèbre artiste malien fondateur de l'orchestre Super Wassoulou.

The second album was also edited on Papa Disco's label in 1978. I think the backing band is also Les Ambassadeurs. But the led singer is famous malian musician Tom Diabaté who founded Super Wassoulou orchestra.

Le troisième album a été enregistré aussi en 1978 mais sur le label Satel Tropiques avec l'orchestre béninois Black Santiago. Léon Keita, l'homme orchestre, chante cette fois avec son frère Germain Keita et revisite de célèbres mélodies maliennes avec le chef d'orchestre de génie : Ignace de Souza.

The third record was recorded on Satel Tropiques label in 1978 with the Black Santiago's band. Léon Keïta is singing with his brother Germain famous malian melodies genius band leader Ignace de Souza.

Compaoré Issouf & Afro Soul System (Burkina-Faso/1978)

Victor Tchakounte dit "Pantalon" (Cameroon/1978)

Rare, unexpected and in excellent condition record. Victor Tchakounte, traditional Cameroonian music singer also called "Pantalon" ("Pants") & Son Groupe de Yaounde recorded thsi album in Benin on Satel label and under artistic direction of Pierre Tchana. I let you discover.

Migan Celestin feat Sagbohan Danialou, Miguelito, Tidiane Kone / 1978

Celestin Migan called Mig-Tino was with Bernard Zoudegnon from Poly-Rythmo one of the best guitarist in Benin during the 70s. Member of the Orchestre de la B.C.B. led by Danialou Sagbohan, Celestin naturally recorded this solo album with Sagbohan on drums or other famous artits like Tidiane Kone on saxophone or Miguelito as chorist. You can discover more music from Mig-Tino on this post.

Célestin Migan, dit Mig-Tino, était avec Bernard Zoudegnon du Poly-Rythmo le meilleur guitariste du Bénin durant les années 70s. Certains disent qu'il était le maitre de Zoudegnon. Membre de l'orchestre de la B.C.B dirigé par Danialou Sagbohan, Célestin a naturellement enregistré ces albums solo avec Sagbohan à la batterie mais aussi d'autres grands noms comme Miguelito, au choeur, ou Tdiane Kone, au saxophone. Vous pouvez découvrir plus amplement Célestin Migan en consultant ce courrier.

Jean Bernard Samboué (Burkina-Faso/1978)

Jean Bernard Samboué was part of the golden age of Burkinabese music with Amadou Ballaké, Pierre Sandwidi or Abdoulaye Cissé. This album was recorded in Benin in 1978. The song "Sonimi" is a very nice blues.

Danialou Sagbohan (1977)

Sagbohan is such listened in his country that it is difficult to find vinyl copies in good shape. I offer you a new copy of his first album on label Badmos.

The famous title "Foutou Bananas" made Sagbohan become famous throughout all west Africa because, first, it is sung in french but mostly because "foutou banana" is a well known Ivorian recipe.

The song "Cocorico" is a hit in Benin, it is part of musical heritage and has been also recorded with poly-rythmo orchestra.

Finally "Dago le Karateka" is a complex tune playing it on guitar, anyway it's performed by fabulous congolese guitarist Louis Wasson who also recorded his album with Sagbohan on drums. I invite you to discover it here.

Il est difficile de trouver des bonnes copies de Sagbohan tellement il est écouté dans son pays. Je vous propose une nouvelle copie de son premier album sur le label Badmos.

Le fameux titre "Foutou Bananas" l'a fait connaitre dans toute l'Afrique de l'ouest parce qu'il est chanté en français mais surtout parce que le "foutou banana" est une recette de cuisine Ivoirienne très connue.

Le morceau "Cocorico" est très connu au Bénin, il fait parti du patrimoine musical et a  été aussi enregistré avec l'orchestre Poly-Rythmo.

Enfin le morceau "Dago le Karateka" est aussi une pure merveille. Un morceau très complexe à la guitare mais interprété par le fabuleux guitariste congolais Louis Wasson. Ce dernier a aussi enregistré un album avec Sagbohan à la batterie que je vous invite à découvrir ici.

Danialou Sagbohan (1978)

I posted this record two years ago, this other copy is better i think...

I have been looking after this great and rare record for a long time. It has been curiously found in Togo. This first own production from Sagbohan is gorgeous. The title "Viva Femme Africaine", that I personnally love, is totally unknown by Benin's audience. Danialou never plays it. "Nou Wame", was previously composed with Orchestre B.C.B. and it is also a fantastic tune. Enjoy this very rare record from 1978 and if someone has the sleeve, please, please send it to me...

J'ai cherché ce disque pendant longtemps. Bizarrement, il a été trouvé au Togo et donné par la personne qui le possédait. Cette première auto-production de Sagbohan est monumentale. Le titre "Viva Femme Africaine", que j'adore, n'est pas connu par l'audience Béninoise, Danialou ne le joue jamais. "Nou Wame" fut d'abord composé avec l'Orchestre de la B.C.B et c'est aussi un morceau d'anthologie. ORCHESTRE DE LA BCB led by Danialou Sagbohan (1978)

Il y a deux ans que je prépare ce courrier. Après une introduction avec Bluecky d'Almeida et Célestin Migan, voici ce sublime album de l'orchestre de la B.C.B (Banque Commerciale du Bénin) dont le chef d'orchestre était l'incontournable Danialou Sagbohan. 

Cet orchestre a été crée après l'instauration du pouvoir marxiste-leniniste du Général Mathieu Kerekou en 1975. A l'époque, il n'était pas facile de jouer de la musique moderne. Les militaires faisaient régulièrement des descentes dans les bars à concert. Pour canaliser ces rebelles afro-beat, le pouvoir à embaucher les plus endurcis dans la banque d'état, la Banque Commerciale du Bénin. Ainsi les artistes musiciens travaillaient dans la banque durant la journée et jouaient le soir dans l'orchestre de la B.C.B. Parmi ces artistes voici les plus célèbres: Danialou Sagbohan, Bluecky d'Almeida, Célestin Gbedjinou, Célestin Migan, Ambroise Akoha, Oscar Kidjo...

Tout l'album s'écoute avec jubilation mais je retiens deux morceaux qui m'ont fait vibrer pendant des mois et des mois. Je n'arrive pas à me lasser de:

"NUWAME", composée et chantée par Danialou Sagbohan, que vous avez pu découvrir dans une autre version dans ce courrier. L'orchestration est ici plus simple, presque reggae, mais lorsque la voix de Sagbohan apparait, la chanson prend une dimension religieuse.

"BCB", composée et chantée par Célestin Gbedjinou, est un bijoux dans lequel on peut apprécier l'unique solo de batterie enregistré en Studio par Danialou Sagbohan. Certains diront que Sagbohan joue à la batterie comme un percussionniste, je réponds que je suis prêt à entendre tous les ces solos si parlants que ce dieu peut nous offrir...

BCB 7801

I have been thinking of this post for two years. After an introduction with Bluecky d'Almeida and Celestin Migan, here is this sublime album of the "Orchestre de la BCB" (Commercial Bank of Benin Orchestra) led by the great Danialou Sagbohan.
This band was founded after the introduction of Marxist-Leninist power by General Mathieu Kerekou in 1975. At the time, it was not easy to play modern music. The military were making regular raids on clubs. To maintain power against afro-beat rebels, the governement decide to hire musicians in the state bank, the "Commercial Bank of Benin". So the musicians were working in the bank during the day and at night playing with B.C.B band. Among the most famous artists of the band: Danialou Sagbohan, Bluecky d'Almeida, Celestin Gbedjinou, Celestin Migan, Ambroise Akoha, Oscar Kidjo...
I can not get tired of these fantastic tunes:
"NUWAME", composed and sung by Danialou Sagbohan, can be heard in a different version here. The orchestration is more simple, almost reggae, but when Sagbohan's voice appears the song takes on a religious dimension.
"BCB", composed and sung by Celestin Gbedjinou, is  jewel where you can enjoy the unique drum solo recording in studio by Danialou Sagbohan. Some would say that Sagbohan Plays the drums as a percussionist, I reply that I am ready to hear all these eloquent solos offered by a god...

Traore Tiemoko dit Patch (Burkina-Faso - 1978)

I continue my exploration of music from Burkina Faso, or rather of Upper Volta with this album from obscure artist Tiemoko Traore. The Cavacha rhythm style of the album was also that of Traore Amadou Ballake which famous "Taximen" album is next issue after "Patch" on Sacodis label.

Seven Brothers Egun Band (Nigeria - 1978)

I think "Seven Brothers Egun Band" is a traditional music band of Badagry, Nigeria. This region was occupied by Dahomey (Benin) until the 19th century. It is largely populated by Gun community, a community deeply rooted in Benin. This album recorded in Nigeria in 1978 is therefore in the tradition of Beninese music. The music of Seven Brothers sounds like Yedenou Adjahoui's of Benin but with more binary arrangements and closer to Yourba music.

Je pense que Seven Brothers Egun Band est un orchestre traditionnel de Badagry, Nigeria. Cette région du Nigeria était occupée par le Dahomey jusqu'au 19ème siècle. Elle est peuplée en grande partie par la communauté Goun, une communauté très ancrée au Bénin. Cet album enregistré au Nigeria en 1978 s'inscrit donc dans la grande tradition de la musique Béninoise. La musique des Seven Brothers ressemble à celle de Yedenou Adjahoui du Bénin mais avec des arrangements plus binaires et plus proches de la musique Yorouba.
