Polaroid of Poly-Rythmo (1971)

There are always good surprises with Poly-Rythmo. Here is one sung by Lohento Eskill and his melodious voice. Both sides are composed by Roberkin Kinnou, unknown composer. I love the song "Assiba", a rhythm taken from traditional Fon rhythm. The exceptional quality of the band make forget the bad of vinyl.

GROUPE AMIKPON (1977)

Amikpon Band is leaded by Antoine Sagbohan. Yes, Antoine is a cousin of Danialou Sagbohan. They have the same age but Antoine is known as famous traditional music singer. As Danialou, he lives in Porto-Novo.

Initiated into voodoo religion and Egungun masks, Antoine sings in Yoruba, Fon or Gun. He is mainly known as the "king of kpalongo rhythm". Amikpon Band recorded its first album in 1977 on label Satel Records. The kpalongo style is already present in Amikpon. A heady pace from the first listening.

In 2005, I met and recorded Amikpon. I was surprised by  the talent of its leader, Antoine Sagbohan. The song "Achiko" is my favorite, Antoine plays acouba drum (congas). He also creates his own drums like patenge drum, a small battery that can be heared on ""Amikpon Solo". Finally, on Vodun inspired title "Agbe", Sagbohan plays gangan drum (talking-drum).

Maurice Sempore & L'HARMONIE VOLTAIQUE (Burkina/1976)

Another pleasant surprise coming from Burkina (Upper-Volta), and as always pressed in Benin. The song "Sona Voci" is anthology, it's about cinema and cinema again...
I also join a story of orchestra Harmonie Voltaique and its leader Maurice Sempore written by Benjamin Medou (here).

The orchestra Harmonie Voltaïque was founded in 1948 by a colonial official at the time, Antoine Joseph Ouedraogo called "Borfo". Returned from Mali, he found that it was necessary to use foreign orchestras (from Ivory Coast in particular). So he decided to create a new band in the Upper Volta.
The band, composed of amateurs at the time, played at Koulouba in the courtyard of old Sare (Sare Antoine's father, accordion player in the band) with 50 francs CFA as entrance for the party. In 1950, the government, sensitive to the initiative of Antoine Ouedraogo, gave a grant of 50 000 francs CFA to the orchestra. It was in 1960 that president Maurice Yameogo helped Harmonie Voltaique band get modern instruments coming from France. The band, with its featured composer, Maurice Sempore, will illuminate the entire Upper Volta and other African countries for its splendid compositions.

Mati Klarwein’s place in the history of 20th century art is unique, nestling at the crossroads of painting and music. From the end of the 1960s, a period as fruitful as it was revolutionary, numerous musicians such as Miles Davis, Carlos Santana and Jimi Hendrix recognised a statement of intent in his work and used it on their record covers as a manifesto. At a time when it was all about vinyl, the cover was more than just a simple illustration, it was a form of visual support, an object of meditation that listeners would gaze at relentlessly while playing their records. Mati Klarwein’s paintings, through their thematic wealth and visionary depth, fitted perfectly with the new values these musicians wanted to express and they subse-quently became the artistic counterpoint to legendary albums like Bitches Brew, Abraxas and This is Madness by the Last Poets, the prophets of hip hop and rap.

Musicians continued to identify with Mati Klarwein’s paintings over the following decades. Antoine de Beaupré, a passionate collector, has found more than 50 album covers coming from almost every genre, from classical to electro-jazz, all with the artist’s signature. Some used an existing painting; others were commissioned especially such as the portraits of Buddy Miles, Greg Allman and the group Earth, Wind and Fire. For the first time ever this book presents the album covers in their entirety, accompanied by related texts, photos and documents with a preface by the writer Serge Bramly (Prix Interallié 2008), a life-long friend of the artist.

Mati Klarwein, visionary artist

Son of a Bauhaus architect and an opera singer, Mati Klar-wein was born in Germany in 1932, he grew up in Palestine, started painting in Paris, in Fernand Léger’s studio where he met Salvador Dali, then later in the Viennese painter Ernst Fuchs’ studio, he obtained French nationality with the help of Madame Malraux, played jazz with Boris Vian before moving to New York in the mid 1960s in the middle of the hippy revolution and he never stopped moving his studio across the world from India, Bali and Morocco to Brazil, Greece, Ghana, Cuba and elsewhere, before ending up in his Balearic village of predilection, Deia, where he passed away in March 2002. His oeuvre consists of more than 600 paintings, including 270 portraits, 280 landscapes, which he called Inscapes, and over 100 Improved Paintings, canvases bought at flea markets which he then adapted into his own work.

Nestor Hountondji / El Rego & ORCHESTRE LES DOYENS (1980)

I thank Jaime, fidel listener, for this rare record found on Youtube. Nestor Hountondji is the composer and El Rego the singer. The "Orchestre Les Doyens" is totally unknown on Oro. This great afro-beat record is inspired for me by Fela and his Egypt 80 band.

Gnonnas Pedro & His Dadjes Band (Gabon)

Gnonnas Pedro recorded this 12-inch single in Gabon with "his Dadjes Band". A rare record. On side 1, "Le Vodjo" is a modernized agbadja rhythm from western Benin and on side 2, "Je voudrais te voir" is a soukous rhythm which lyrics honor president Omar Bongo. I think this song has aged well, I am not sure that nowadays Gabonese people would appreciate the lyrics.

Sezonmon Alosse (ALS 31/1977)

I continue my exploration of traditional Benin's music with a record edited on Albarika Store label in 1977 by Sezonmon Alosse, already exhibited on Oro.

Kante Manfla (1967)

I love this musical period in Ivory-Coast when artists coming from all over Africa found themselves in studio and recorded a variety of rhythms like soukous, morna or boogaloo, like in this EP composed and sung by the great Kante Manfila. Here is an article written by Bertrand Lavaine from RFI radio:

Born in a village near Kankan, east of Guinea, Manfila really began his career in Abidjan where he came to live when he was twenty years. Already started on guitar, the young man continued his training in Côte d'Ivoire to Mali's saxophonist Moussa Cissoko. Then he met Sorry Bamba who said about him: " I meet the Guinean Manfila Kante, guitarist in the famous orchestra N'Douba Koidio. He says he wants to create a band, we agree to collaborate. He will be leader, singer and guitar solo. I will be flutist, trumpet player and singer. Together, we recruit musicians and we give the name of African Style to the band. The success of the African Style allowed us to record many records on Djima Records with producer Djima Yanda, the older brother of famed producer Badmos...

Vodun Music: Achina

Achinasi by Orogod

Achina is a known and feared vodun in Benin. Unlike cosmic vodun (earth, air, fire, water) Achina comes from a clan, that is to say that one becomes a follower only by descent. It is a "family" god. Achina followers had a very special social function at the time of the kingdoms of Benin or Nigeria, they were the "executioners" of the kings. Today they no longer play this role but their vodun is still alive and ceremonies are affiliated to the ancestors of the clan.

I am always pleasantly surprised to discover a new band from Benin. The orchestra "Les Black Fingers de Cotonou" is for me totally unknown such as  singer Kpochan, who apprently self-produced the album. I think the record was released at the end of the 70's but it compiles several songs recorded from 7 inches. Therefore, the sound is sometimes awful, only the song "Gnonnou" is in a perfect shape.

Vodun Music: ASO

Giant Balafon Aso by Orogod

I want to return to the sources and values of Oro: Share music, including music from Vodun religion. Many do not know that I'm a documentary filmmaker. I produced several documentaries about Vodun in Benin.
Aso is a voodoo fetish and unique musical instrument, the biggest balafon in the world. It is a "double xylophone dug in the earth" as musicologist named it when he heard and shot it in 1952. There remains only one Aso in Benin and I offer the only existing recording. Indeed, Aso is a very particular fetish that opens and closes ceremonies of Vodun Achina. In 2002, I was allowed to to film and record, and share, this music loaded with spirits and terribly powerful. Its main instrument is dual giant balafon dug in the ground. The two drummers face each other, the big executes the rhythmic, the small harmonics.

Phany Agboton & Les Satelites (1977)

In this gloomy atmosphere, almost apocalyptic, I feel lonely and orphan of a musical must-die: Global Groove. What tomorrow will bring ? Where to find these records that make us travel over Africa ? wait on ebay expensive rarities or go to Africa in search of unlikely collectors ? Pending the return of my brothers in arm, here is furious and warrior afrobeat

Orchestre Black Santiago & Sena Joi Jelia (1979)

Sena Joi Jelia is a woman singer who began his career with Orchestra Poly-Rythmo. This record was produced in 1979 on label Polydisco. "Polydisco" was the originally name chosen by orchestra Poly-Rythmo.

BESSANVI GBESSI (1976)

We often underestimate the value of traditional music recordings. During the period of vinyl editions, traditional orchestras have recorded many records as far as modern bands. Today traditional music did not move, true to its fidelity to old instruments and style, emancipated thanks to technical evolutions or recording.
This record from 1976, produced by Satel Records, is part of the first recordings from Gbessi. The artist is not just anybody, he is a huge star until today. here is a biography found on website Nonvitcha:

His real name is Albert Bessanvi Koffi, he is known as Bessanvi Gbessi Zolawadji. He was born in 1952 in Djegbadji, few miles from Ouidah, a place known for its migration of Xwla people. In this landscape, he learned to read the wonders of nature, to admire the waves, a source of inspiration. His fondness for the song comes from his father, Bessanvi Dossou alias Atchaba, a geat singer, and especially his mother Adjouavi, which also belongs to the lineage of great Xwla singers. The artist deserves admiration. Gbessi accumulated trophies and awards. Internationally, he was nominated two times for the Kora (1999 and 2000), then in 2001 he won the Kora Award in the category of best traditional artists from Africa. It was the great consecration.

Polaroid of Poly-Rythmo (1974)

We are Global Groovers waiting for dark days, pending the guillotine. Meanwhile, here is an old Polaroid of Poly-Rythmo as  a copy of Dahomey's musical environment during 1972.
This vinyl record was edited on label "Echos Sonores du Dahomey" and produced by Miss Grataissy. Joseph Aménoudji called "Vicky" composed and sung. Side 1 contains a typical Poly-Rythmic sato rhythm and side 2, a cavacha entitled "La Vérité Vraie" (The Whole Truth). A title that speaks...

The End ?

Oro will never be dead.
They can censor music but not words,
Oro is not dead, he is the breath of ancestors.

To survive today, here is the breath of Ghan. I found those rips on Ebay. I did not notice the seller's name so I hope he will recognize so that I may thank him.

ORCHESTRE DE LA BCB led by Danialou Sagbohan (1978)

I have been thinking of this post for two years. After an introduction with Bluecky d'Almeida and Celestin Migan, here is this sublime album of the "Orchestre de la BCB" (Commercial Bank of Benin Orchestra) led by the great Danialou Sagbohan.
This band was founded after the introduction of Marxist-Leninist power by General Mathieu Kerekou in 1975. At the time, it was not easy to play modern music. The military were making regular raids on clubs. To maintain power against afro-beat rebels, the governement decide to hire musicians in the state bank, the "Commercial Bank of Benin". So the musicians were working in the bank during the day and at night playing with B.C.B band. Among the most famous artists of the band: Danialou Sagbohan, Bluecky d'Almeida, Celestin Gbedjinou, Celestin Migan, Ambroise Akoha, Oscar Kidjo...
I can not get tired of these fantastic tunes:
"NUWAME", composed and sung by Danialou Sagbohan, can be heard in a different version here. The orchestration is more simple, almost reggae, but when Sagbohan's voice appears the song takes on a religious dimension.
"BCB", composed and sung by Celestin Gbedjinou, is  jewel where you can enjoy the unique drum solo recording in studio by Danialou Sagbohan. Some would say that Sagbohan Plays the drums as a percussionist, I reply that I am ready to hear all these eloquent solos offered by a god...

MIGAN CELESTIN

Celestin Migan alias Mig-Tino deserves a special post. Here are different musical worlds composed and sung by the greatest beninese guitarist during the 70's. This set of records were composed between 1975 and 1980. The first is new on Oro.

Migan Celestin used to be the leader of "The Commandos" band, also known as El Rego's backing band. This single edited on label "Columbia" and Migan sings in french. "Je m'en fous" (I don't care) is a wonderful cavacha rhythm, "Pas de sot métier" (No silly business) is a traditional rhythm which lyrics promote musician lifestyle because "music is a work".

This other single was recorded with the "Supermen" band, an other orchestra created by Celestin after the "Commandos". Side 1 is a terrible soukous rhythm which reveals Migan's talent as guitarist. Side 2 is an agbadja rhythm with surprising guitar again.

To finish off, a sublime album featuring Danialou Sagbohan on drums and backing vocals, and Tidjani Kone on saxophone. This record was edited on famous label Papa Disco. "Agbeyame" is one of the best track, a melancholic and unforgettable song. For the story, the recording was done in one take.

Bluecky d'Almeida & Les Satelites (1977)

Bluecky d'Almeida began his singing career in 1964. With El rego, he is part of Beninese music deans. This single was recorded in 1977 with the "Satelites" band which is, I suppose, the official band of "Satel" label. The song "Assitchi" is a reggae rhythm and "J'ai des problèmes" (I have problems) is a makossa rhythm that I personally love.
Bluecky d'Almeida is still alive and will soon celebrate his 50-year career.

It is good to start the year with the most powerful band of Benin in the last century (with Poly-Rythmo of course). This military band, "Les Volcans", is a dangerous army that can attack you each album. That of today is composed by the epiphanic Thierry Boco, traveling back from Cuba, who shares with us the gold of salsa rhythms.
This record was edited on the label "Editions Philomena" in 1980. It has been arranged by "the two brains". I do not know those "two brains" but they have offered two wonder pieces: "Medewi" and "Semedo".
