T.P. POLY-RYTHMO & Avolonto Honoré

Some artists have marked music like like Honoré Avolonto and his particular way of singing, especially on afrobeat. "E So Plait Mi A" is, for me, one of the best songs of Avolonto. Edited first as EP on Albarika Store label.

Honoré Avolonto started his career as a percussionist. The young Tumba player went onto become one of Benin most prolific composer. He composed Benin's most succesfull LP in 1979 (SAT 173). This album was recorded with The Black Santiago but he also composed and sang for Poly-Rythmo and Los Commandos.

Certains artistes ont marqué la musique comme Honoré Avolonto et sa façon unique de chanter, en particulier sur de l'afro-beat. "E So Plait Mi A" est, pour moi, un des meilleurs morceaux d'Avolonto. Sortie d'abord en 45 tours sur Albarika Store.

Honoré Avolonto a commencé sa carrière comme percussionniste. "Tumbiste" qui deviendra un des compositeurs béninois les plus prolifiques. Il a écrit un des albums les plus vendu au Bénin en 1979. Cet album a été enregistré avec l'orchestre Black Santiago, mais Avolonto a aussi travaillé avec l'orchestre Poly-Rythmo ainsi que Los Commandos.

SPECIAL POST: SAGBOHAN DANIALOU

For a long time, i wanted to post a special article on Sagbohan's traditional music. Danialou is still the only artist in Benin to make a living from his music without new studio album recordings. And not with modern music but traditional. Indeed, he is very much in demand for ceremonies (Vodoun ceremonies, burials or even weddings).
During the 2000's, Sagbohan recorded several CDs of traditional music. The songs are recorded in studio but often on live conditions. The pieces are therefore medleys.
The most specific rhythm of Sagbohan is Kakagbo rhythm. A rhythm of Goun culture, quite close to Yorouba culture. "Kaka" is the bamboo in Goun language, but also the instrumental base of Kakagbo.



Depuis longtemps je voulais poster un article conséquent sur Sagbohan et la musique traditionnelle. Danialou est encore le seul artiste, au Bénin, à vivre de sa musique sans enregistrer de nouveaux albums. Non pas de sa musique "moderne" mais traditionnelle. En effet, il est très sollicité pour des cérémonies (enterrements, mariages, fêtes religieuses) dans les quelles il ne joue que traditionnel.

Durant les années 2000's, Sagbohan a édité plusieurs CD de musiques traditionnelles. Les morceaux sont enregistrés en studio mais souvent dans des conditions de live. Les morceaux sont donc de longues durées et sous forme de medley.

Le rythme le plus spécifique à Sagbohan est le Kakagbo. Un rythme de la culture Goun, très proche de la culture yorouba. "Kaka" est le bambou en langue Goun, mais aussi le socle instrumental du rythme Kakagbo. 

In 2000, we filmed and recorded in live stereo (with a great sound engineer) along the Ouémé River, on a sacred island.  We had been there by boat with the band and the crew. We recorded an unreleased folk song but above all a Kakagbo rhythm to please the "neighbors" who came to listen the master.

Nous avons filmé et enregistré ce rythme en stéréo (avec amplificateur à lampe)  enregistré live, en 2000, le long du fleuve Ouémé. Nous avons pris une grande pirogue avec l'orchestre et l'équipe de tournage pour rejoindre une forêt sacrée isolée sur une île. Nous avons enregistré deux morceaux folk inédits mais surtout un rythme kakagbo pour faire plaisir aux "voisins" venus en masse pour écouter le maitre.

Sagbohan plays many different traditional rhyhms of southern Benin, like west rhythms which are also played in Togo, a country which is more a cousin than a neighbor.

Sagbohan et son orchestre maitrisent différents rythmes du sud Bénin, comme les rythmes de l'Ouest, que l'on jouent aussi au Togo, pays plus cousin que voisin.


In 2004, I produced traditional song's clip "Hoho Gbédji", a voodoo song modernized by Sagbohan. In this clip you will see Achina voodoo ceremonies. A specific cult of Goun community. During the day of the shooting Sagbohan came to visit and was invited to play with the sacred drum called Kpahoule (same drum as Sagbohan's). En 2004, je réalise le clip  du morceau  traditionnel "Hoho Gbedji", morceau vodoun réactualisé par Sagbohan. Dans ce clip figure les adeptes du culte Vodoun Achina. Un culte spécifique à la communauté Goun. Le jour de ces cérémonies, Sagbohan est venu faire une visite. In 1998, Sagbohan took part of Lucky peolple Center collective through the incredible documentary "Lucky People Center International" which I invite you to watch in this post. For the movie, Sagbohan had built a battery of traditional drums.

T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo (1978)

And one more LP for Poly-Rythmo, released in 1978 on the essential Albarika Store label. This song "Mede Magnin Messe" is composed and sung by Melomey Clement.

Et un album de plus pour les Poly-Rythmo, sorti en 1978 sur l'incontournable label Albarika Store. Ce morceau, "Mede Magnin messe" est composé et chanté par Mélomey Clément.

Stanislas Tohon (1982)

Stanislas Tohon left us one year ago, on february 26, and he will have had a huge impact on modern Beninese music. I like this son g from 1982, it has something special, could'nt tell.

Stanislas Tohon modernized the traditional Tchinkoumé rhythm and called it "Tchink System". His music is powerfull, all titles emit an energy coming from Tchinkoumé rhythm. The sound is heavy like Tohon himself.

Stanisals Tohon nous a quitté  il y a un an, le 26 février 2019, et il aura marqué la musique moderne béninoise. Ce morceau a quelque chose de spécial, je ne serais  dire quoi...

Stanislas Tohon a modernisé le rythme traditionnel Tchinkoumé et l'a renomé le "Tchink System". Je trouve que sa musique est vraiment puissante. Tous les morceaux dégagent une energie propre au Tchinkoumé.

Daga H. Georges & l'orchestre Poly-Rythmo (1973)

Daga H. Georges, also called Doctor Senan, has composed and sang backed by Poly-Rythmo and also Black Santiago. This record has been released by "Disque Sachey" label in 1973.

LES SYMPATHICS de Porto-Novo

Orchestra Les Sympathics was created in 1972 by Herman Laleye, the leader of the famous Black Dragons ' orchestra. This Albarika's opus is wonderful and I have been looking after it for a long time. Herman is still alive and sings every sunday in Porto-Novo, Benin. He is more than a singer and a composer. He became Balé. That means that he became chief of a Vodun Society of masks called Egungun, the masks of dead people. This album was recorded in 1978 and it has something special and different from the same period.

L'orchestre Les Sympathics a été fondé en 1972 par Herman Laléyé, le fameux leader de l'orchestre Black Dragons. Ce nouveau chapitre d'Albarika est prodigieux. Je le cherchais depuis un moment et c'est chose faite. Herman (à gauche sur la pochette) est toujours vivant et chante tous les dimanches à Porto-Novo, Bénin. Il est plus qu'un chanteur et compositeur, il est devnu Balé. Cela signifie qu'il est devenu chef de culte Vodoun, celui des revenants et de leur masques puissants: les Egungun. Cet album a été enregistré en 1978 et il a quelque chose de spécial come sa pochette.

Danialou Sagbohan (90's)

Sagbohan is called "one man band" because he plays both modern and traditional music. Here is an example with this song taken from a German CD compilation during the 90's. Sagbohan's traditional music from the 15 years will be the subject of a heavy post soon.

Sagbohan est appelé "l'homme orchestre" car il joue aussi bien de la musique moderne que de la musique traditionnelle.Voici un exemple avec  ce morceau tiré d'une compilation CD allemande durant les années 90. La musique traditionnelle chez Sagbohan durant les 15 dernières années sera le  lourd sujet d'un prochain courrier.

Another Sato Rhythm so dear to Lohento Eskill on "Dieu Merci" (Thank's God) label. You never get tired of Lohento's hypnotic voice.

Encore un rythme Sato si cher à Lohento Eskill sur le label "Dieu Merci". On ne se lasse jamais de la vcoix hypnotique de Lohento.

Orchestre Les Volcans & Andre Lokonon (Benin/1976)

For a long time I looked after this untraceable record to discover its music. Thanks to Analog Africa label and Samy Ben Redjeb, whom I thank for several records that i shared, I wad finally able to satisfy my curiosity.

Formed since 1962, the Orchestra of the Police was one of the best reams of that era. Later, he met a few years of winter and had to be resurrected in 1972.

Since 1973, the staff has been totally renovated by young elements formed in the crucible of many courses sanctioned by the CAP (Certificate of Professional Competence of music). During the year 1973, a special investment has enabled the orchestra to provide modern and electric instruments of high quality.

Undoubtable, the National Orchestra of the Police is better equipped both in personal and instruments. It probably will take place in the forfront. It is laready working. It happens. It will certainly succeed. The public will surely reserve a warm and encouraging welcome.

Pendant longtemps j'ai cherché ce disque introuvable pour découvrir ses musiques. Grace au label Analog Africa et Samy, que je remercie pour plusieurs titres que j'ai partagés, j'ai pu enfin assouvir ma soif de curiosité.

Constitué depuis 1962, l'orchestre de la gendarmerie fut l'une des meilleures formations de cette époque. Par la suite, il connut quelques années d'hivernage et devait être ressuscité à partir de 1972.

Depuis 1973, le personnel a été totalement rénové par de jeunes éléments formés au creuset de nombreux stages de musique sanctionnés par le C.A.P. (certificat d'Aptitude Professionnelle de musique). Au cours de la même année 1973, un investissement spécial a permis de doter l'orchestre d'instruments ultra-modernes et électroniques de très haute qualité.

Incontestablement, l'Orchestre National de la Gendarmerie est mieux équipé tant en personnel qu'en instruments. Il reprendra surement sa place dans le peloton de tête. Il s'efforce déjà. Il arrive. Il réussira certainement. Le public, j'en suis persuadé, lui réservera un accueil des plus chaleureux et encourageants.

Orchestre Super Borgou (Benin)

I thank again Ogoun Ferraille for this record from Super Borgou orchestra. This band and his leader Moussa Mama may be from the north of Benin, different from the south and its many orchestras, but united around pop music like "Ya Bara" or pachanga with "Sou Binin Sara".

Je remercie encore Ogoun Ferraille pour ce disque de l'orchestre Super Borgou. Cet orchestre et son leader, Moussa Mama, sont originaires du nord du Bénin, différent du sud et ses nombreux orchestres, mais résume l'esprit musical du pays réuni autour de la pachanga avec "Soun Binin Sara" ou la pop avec "Ya bara".

DYO WYTHS : "START TO PRAY" (Dahomey/1971)

Behind this singer and this cover hides Ferry Djimmy, Beninese singer and composer and his Dji-Kins band from Ivory Coast. Ferry Djimmy is known for his furious funk rock, loved by collectors.  "Start to pry" song was recorded in Dahomey/Benin in 1971.

Derrière cette chanteuse et cette pochette se cache Ferry Djimmy, artiste et compositeur béninois et son orchestre Dji-Kins de Côte d'Ivoire. Ferry Djimmy est connu pour son rock funk et furieux, prisé des collectionneurs. "Le morceau "Start to pray" a été enregistré au Dahomey/Bénin en 1971.

PRINCE DGIB'S (1976)

I would like to share this wonderful piece of Prince Dgib's alias Gilbert Dossou (thank's wWilliam Bell). Dgib's has produced and composed in Ivory Coast with numerous artists such asPat Thomas, Sam Mangwana, Poly-Rythmo or Super Mandé bands.

Je voudrais partager ce morceau superbe morceau de Prince Dgib's alias Gilbert Dossou (merci William Bell). Dgib's a produit et composé en côte d'Ivoire avec de nombreux artiste comme Pat Thomas, Sam Mangwana, le Poly-Rythmo ou encore Le Super Mandé.

Nkwitchoua & Les Satelites (1977)

This band worked with many artists in Benin like Stanislas Tohon, Blueky d'Almeida, Phany Agboton and more...

Aucune information sur Robert Nkwitchoua. Si quelqu'un a des infos, s'il vous plait partagez. En tout cas "Po Lusi" est un excellent morceau Afro-Jerk enregistré avec l'orchestre maison des Editions SATEL: Les Satelites. Cet orchestre a travaillé avec beaucoup d'artistes béninois tels que Stanislas Tohon, Blueky d'Almeida, Phany Agboton et beaucoup d'autres. 

Danialou Sagbohan/Stanislas Tohon & Les Astronautes (1976)

Dear listeners, i'm back but not for best musical reasons. Dau 1 of confinement in Paris and desire to share again. Double sharing thanks to Ogoun Ferraille from Switzerland. Warm thoughts and many thanks to him.
On this obscure single, two stars from the middle 70's are making a fight. On side A, Stanislas Tohon, on side B Danialou Sagbohan. On the middle, the same band : Les Astronautes.
Honestly, we don't recognize Stanislas tohon's style. on the other hand, we recognize Sagbohan's. I think this record was recorded in 1975 or 1976.



Chers auditeurs, je suis de retour mais pas pour des meilleures raisons musicales. Premier jour de confinement à Paris et des envies de repartage. Un double partage car le disque suivant nous vient d'Ogoun Ferraille, Suisse. Pensées complices et grand merci.
Sur cet obscure 45 tours les deux grandes stars de la fin des années 70's s'affrontent. Sur la face A, Stanislas Tohon, sur la face B, Danialou Sagbohan. Et au milieu, un orchestre commun : Les Astronautes. 
Honnêtement, on ne reconnais pas Stanislas Tohon, tout jeune qu'il est. Par contre, tout jeune qu'il est aussi, on reconnait bien le style, la voix, la batterie de Sagbohan Danialou. Je pense que ce disque date de 1975 ou 1976.

Sagbohan et son orchestre partageront la soirée avec Vaudou Game et l'irremplaçable Roger Damawuzan ainsi que Batida. Une soirée à ne pas rater.
