Yedenou Adjahoui (1981)

I have not posted Yedenou Adahoui's music for a long time. As before, I grew in time and suggest two LP's recorded in 1981 at Lagos, Nigeria. Adjahoui recorded dozens of albums, he was the most popular and prolific traditional singer of his time. He was part of Goun community, as Danialou Sagbohan, highly represented in the region of Badagri, Ogoun State, Nigeria...

Yedenou Adjahoui (1983)

Yedenou Adjahoui was born about 1930 in Avrankou, near Porto-Novo. He started music at the age of 12 with his brother and was initiated, at the same time, into Vodoun Sakpata, the god of earth. He was both traditional leader, healer and songwriter. Adjahoui was very popular because he had a great talent as a speaker and columnist. He was the master of rhythm Massè Gohoun, a traditional rhythm of the Goun tribe. He recorded over 50 records and about 30 tapes. He died in 1995.

After many recordings with the label Albarika Store, he started recording, in 1983, with the label of a Yoruba car dealership, Ola Oluwa Ni. Here are his first two albums on this label, the N°1 and the N°4.

Yedenou Adjahoui (1975)

This is another album from Adjahoui on Albarika. It seems to have been recorded in 1975. I hope one day someone will translate his lyrics. Thus we will be able to know the poetry and the journalistic talent of Adjahoui.

Yedenou Adjahoui

Yedenou is a prophet of beninese traditional's music. When playing live, during the 70's, he could muster thousands of people. He was mainly a poet and a journalist who could easely criticize the government's politic.
Those two EP's produced by Albarika Store in 1972. They were given to me by Dailyleftover and I really thank him. He gave me the vinyl and luckily I had the cover (ASEP 1050) ...

I suppose that this LP in stereo and with a good recording sound is from the late seventies. I would love to talk Goun language because I would be able to translate the poetry and chronics from Adjahoui.
The tune "Jesu Jiji" is a pure Kakagbo rhythm. Beware of Kaka, a powerfull warrior rhythm which is played by the famous "One man-band": Sagbohan Danialou.

Anniversary Post: ALBARIKA & ADJAHOUI: 001

This is the first production and recording, in 1969, from Albarkia Store and Yedenou Adjahoui. As always Adjahoui sings in Goun, a language from the Goun people of Porto Novo. But he also sings, on face B, in Mina, from the ouest of Benin, in Aneho. Many traditional singers were singing in different languages that's how Adjahoui become so popular...
The Picture has been taken in 1969 by Gilbert Rouget, the famous musicologist who recorded many ceremonies. The girl is a Vodoun adept of Dikwin, a rare Vodoun from Goun People.
I never saw them during my shootings in Porto-Novo.

INITIATION INTO VOODOO MUSIC: YEDENOU ADJAHOUI

Yedenou Adjahoui is a famous traditional and voodoo singer from Benin. He was the biggest indpiration for Benin's older generation of singers. He was a real poet. He could sing about voodoo gods as wall as vividly as about street people. Adjahoui was initiated to Sakpata's vooddoo, the Earth's voodoo.
His traditional's music may be difficult to hear, but, as the famous musicologist, Gilbert Rouget, said: "Voodoo music is difficult to understand because it is the most complicated in the world. All the rhytms are inside voodoo music."

The first person to introduce Yedenou Adjahoui was DJ Franc O from Voodoo Funk in his Mede woui 's mix with a very rare title: Yedenou Adjahoui: "Keke Zeto".

Yedenou left us in 1995.
