Anassoua Jazz de Parakou

Anassoua Jazz de Parakou is an avatar of Anos Band. Alidou Boukary is partly leader of both bands. Those artists of north Benin like Anos Bandn, Anassou Jazz or fabulous Super Borgou, reveal us extremely rich music.

Anassoua Jazz de Parakou est un avatar de l'orchestre Anos Band. Alidou Boukary est en partie le leader des deux orchestres. Ces orchestres du nord du Bénin, Anos Band, Anassou Jazz ou Super Borgou nous dévoilent une musique extrêmement riche.

First record is the one i prefer et the most recent one, around 1972-75. Compositors are Assouma Mama and Yacoubou Issoufou Alfa

On label Discafric, Alidou Boukary composed all the four titles. It's another period 1968-70. Rumba and Bolero's rhythms.

LES MESSAGERS DU BÉNIN (1978)

Excellent record of Les Messagers du Bénin on label Discafric. The band covered famous title "Nou Wa Me" from Danialou Sagbohan that you can find here or here. Side 2, also very good, with "Kou Ehou Issa" was composed by Janvier Kouazoti.

Orchestre ELECTRO-SUCCES & Orchestre NATIONAL JAZZ (1965)

New beninese band from the sixties, Orchestre Electro-Succès. The composer is Leon Houéssouvi and I discover the music as you.
The other side is played by National Jazz band, another band much more successful.

Siagbo Dieudonné Eddie & Martine Blanchelle (Togo)

DISCAFRIC BAND & Robert Degbevi

C'est la première fois que l'orchestre Discafric Band est évoqué sur le blog. Malheureusement je n'ai aucune information sur le groupe. Par contre le togolais Robert Degbevi n'est pas inconnu, je vous conseille ce lien.

Robert Alognon Degbevi était ce qu'on pouvait appeler le "débrouillard talentueux" de la chanson. Longtemps il s'était autoproduit et vendait ses disques dans la rue avant que son chemin ne croise celui de Jimmy Hope qui sera son premier producteur. Surnommé le "philosophe", l'artiste à la guitare sèche saura désormais sécherons larmes. Alognon Degbevi est décédé en fevrier 2010. Ce disque est le premier auto-produit par l'artiste et les deux morceaux sont vraiment excellents. Ceux qui, à l'époque, l'ont acheté dans la rue étaient vraiment chanceux.

This the first time that Discafric Band is mentioned on the blog. Unfortunately, I don't informations about the band. Robert Degbevi is not unknown, here is a post that I recommend.

Robert Alognon Degbevi was what might be called "the resourceful talent" of the song. For a long time he had self-produced and sold his records on the street before his path croosed that of Jimmy Hope who will be his first producer. Nicknames the "philosopher", the acoustic guitar musician will now dry up tears. Alognon Degbevi died in February 2010. This excellent record is the first self-produced by the artist and people were very lucky buying it in the street.

Super Jheevs

La face A de ce disque a été éditée par le label Analog Africa, puis relayée par Radiodiffusion Internationaal, mais les "Super Jheevs des Paillotes de Bohicon" n'ont jamais été présentés sur Oro. Voici donc tout le 45 Tours original, édité par le label Discafric et pressé en France au début des années 70s. On est dans du James Brown pure sauce agouti.

The A side of this record has been recently edited by Analog Africa, then relayed by Radiodiffusion Internationaal, but the "Super Jheevs des Paillotes de Bohicon" have never been featured on Oro. So here is the original and all EP edited on Discafric label and pressed in France. I think  it has been recorded in the early 70s.

Orchestre Renova Band d'Abomey (1965)

Renova Band were part of the the 60s scene in Dahomey (Benin). Together with Super Star de Ouidah and Orchestre Picoby Band among others, Renova Band formed the first generation of modern music bands in Dahomey, mixing new genres like rumba, cha-cha-cha, salsa and jerk with traditional and local elements. The leader of the band was William Basile and one of its member, composer and singer, was the famous Nestor Hountondji (leader of the "Volcans du Bénin"), who composed "Dada Sagbo" and "Bonne Année". This EP is the first from "Discafric" label and it was released in 1965. After those first recordings, Renova Band life will be transformed by the arrival of a new member. L'Orchestre Renova Band fait parti de la première génération de groupes qui émerge en 1963. Avec d'autres comme Super Star de Ouidah, Picoby Band ou Dany Band, Renova Band reprend des rythmes tels que rumba, cha-cha-cha, salsa et jerk et y intègre des éléments traditionnels et locaux. Le chef d'orchestre était William Basile et l'un des membres du groupe n'était autre que le grand Nestor Hountondji, futur chef d'orchestre des Volcans du Bénin. Sur ce premier 45 tours du label Discafric, dâté de 1965, Nestor y compose "Dada Sagbo" et "Bonne Année". Les Revenants de Ouidah

1965, still on Discafric Label, here are the "Revenants de Ouidah". The "Revenants" are ghosts. They are called Egungun in Yoruba language and Kuvito in Fon language. They represent spirits of the dead who come back, hidden from head to foot, to communicate, in words and music, judgments or councils to the living people. The Egungun belong to secret societies and not to a Voodoo god. Becareful, Touching a Egungun can cause your death !

Toujours sur le label Discafric, voici "les Revenants de Ouidah". Les revenants sont appelés Egungun en langue Yoruba et Kouvito en langue Fon. Ils représentent les esprits des morts, qui reviennent masqués des pieds à la tête, afin de prodiguer des conseilset des jugements aux vivants. Les Egungun appartient à des sociétés secrètes et non à un dieu Vodoun. Attention, toucher un revenant peut causer votre mort !

Super Star de Ouidah (1965)

As we already know, the Orchestre Super Star de Ouidah was one of the oldest modern band of Benin. Bentho Gustave, the bassist of the Poly-Rythmo, began his career in this formation. The two main composers and singers of the Super Star were Pascal Medagbe and Joseph Tao. They sing Bolero and Biguine songs on this EP recorded in 1965.
