NORD CAMEROUN RYTHMS

For a long time this extremely rare and fabulous record has been asked. For good reason I repost it. I think the singer is Hamad Kalkaba, known to have recorded, on the same label Sonafric, with "Le Grand Orchestre de la Garde Républicaine du Cameroun".

Depuis longtemps ce disque fabuleux m'a été redemandé. Je le reposte et pour cause, ce disque est rarissime et génial. Je crois que le chanteur s'appelle Hamad Kalkaba, connu pour avoir enregistré sur le même label Sonafric avec Le Grand Orchestre de la Garde Républicaine du Cameroun.

Sam Fan Thomas (Cameroon/1985)

J'ai souvent parlé de Sam Fan Thomas car il fait partie intégrante de l'histoire de la musique Béninoise. Il a souvent enregistré sur le label Satel et a repris des chansons d'auteur béninois qu'il a exporté dans le monde. Cet album enregistré en 1985 n'est pas le meilleur pour moi, à cause de la batterie électronique qui me procure des électrochocs.

I have often spoken of Sam Fan Thomas because he is a part of music from Benin. He has recorded on the label Satel, picked songs composed by Beninese authors for exporting them worldwide. This album recorded in 1985 is not the best for me, because of the electronic drum that gives me electric shocks.

Sam Fan Thomas (Cameroon - SATEL 110/1977)

Sam Fan Thomas of Cameroon is a famous singer and guitarist who became known in 1984 with his album "African Typic Collection" sold more than one million copies. He began his solo career in 1976, traveling and recording in Benin like many other foreign artists. He will record a second album in 1980 on the same label Tropiques Satel backed by Black Santiago Orchestra. You can consult this album here.

Sam Fan Thomas est une grande star camerounaise qui s'est fait connaitre en 1984 avec son album "African Typic Collection" vendu a plus d'un million d'exemplaires. Il commença sa carrière solo en 1976 et part enregistrer au Bénin comme beaucoup d'autres artistes étrangers. Il enregistrera un deuxième album en 1980 sur le même label Tropiques Satel accompagné par l'Orchestre Black Santiago que vous pouvez consulter ici.

Je n'ai pas d'informations sur l'orchestre figurant dans l'album d'aujourd'hui.

Après Eboa Lottin, voici une autre collaboration de Poly-Rythmo avec la musique Camerounaise et son ambassadrice, la chanteuse et compositrice Betti Betti. Je n'ai pas d'informations sur Betti Betti, que de la musique qui fut enregistrée au Bénin.

Eboa Lottin (Cameroon) & Poly-Rythmo (1976)

Emmanuel Eboa Lottin was born in Douala in 1942 from the reverend Adolphe Lottin, renovator of the Cameroonese Baptist Church, and who composed nearly 400 religious songs. Eboa Lottin sings from his childhood. He began with the harmonica then the guitar. Designer, wood sculptor, Eboa is a self-taught musician. "I'm a singing jourbalist", he likes to say. He likes plaid and flowers shirts, quiet, good food and loves palm wine that he calls "the saliva of God".

March 1967 was the start of an eventful career. First winner of the international VICKS STARS, he arrived in Paris and signed an exclusive contract with Philips. His first titles were: "Matumbi-Matumbi", "Longa Da", "Besombes" and "Martin", will meet a real success.

In 1970, Eboa Lottin experienced his best tours in Centra Africa and especially in Zaire and Gabon. Then he went to the conquest of West Africa. In January 1974, Aziza firm made him known to the Togolose and Beninise public. One year later, he signed a contract with the Satel label of Benin.

This album, on Satel, includes songs recorded between 1975 and 1976 with the glorious Poly-Rythmo. It is rich of many rhythms, makossa, rumba, bosanova, gospel, jerk, slow, finally, enough to please everyone.

Emmanuel Eboa Lottin est né à Doula en 1942, du révérend Pasteur Adolphe Lottin, rénovateur de l'Eglise Baptiste du Camerounaise, qui composa près de 400 cantiques. Eboa Lottin chante dès sa plus tendre enfance. Il apprend l'harmonica puis la guitare. Vernisseur décorateur, sculpteur sur bois, Eboa Lottin est un musicien autodidacte. "Je suis un journaliste chantant", se plait-il à dire. Il aime les chemises à carreaux et à fleurs, le calme, la bonne cuisine, adore le vin de palme qu'il appelle "la salive du Bon Dieu".

Mars 1967 fut le départ d'une carrière mouvementée. Premier lauréat du concours international Vicks Vedettes, il arrive à Paris et signe un contrat d'exclusivité avec Philips. Ses premiers titres: "Matumba - Matumba", "Da Longo", "Besombe" et "Martine" connaîtreont un réel succès.

En 1970, Eboa Lottin connaitra ses meilleurs souvenirs de tournées en Afrique Centrale et surtout au Zaïre et au Gabon. Puis il part à la conquête de l'Afrique de l'Ouest. En Janvier 1974, la firme Aziza le fit connaitre au public Togolais et Béninois. Un an plus tard, il signe un contrat avec le label Satel du Bénin.

Cet album qui regroupe des morceaux enregistrés entre 1975 et 1976 a été enregsitré avec l'orchestre Poly-Rythmo mélane tous les rythmes, makossa, rumba, bosanova, gospel, jerk, slow, enfin assez pour plaire à tout le monde.

LOUIS WASSON feat. Ignace de Souza, Danialou Sagbohan, Miguelito (Cameroon/1979)

Louis Wasson is a great guitarist and arranger from Cameroon. During the 70's, he spent few years in Benin recording with numerous artists such as Danialou Sagbohan or Ambroise Fidegnon. He also arranged albums like that of Antoine Dougbé (watch links). All his recordings are remarkable.

On this soukous and reggae LP, Ignace de Souza is on trumpet, Danialou Sagbohan i the battery and Miguelito is the chorus, no less... A rare record with excellent arrangements and amazing guitars. I only regret that Sagbohan does not solo, but as he says: "I work for the band, a drummer must remain humble". This number 175 from label Satel was recorded in 1978.

Louis Wasson est un grand guitariste et arrangeur Camerounais. Durant les années 70's, il passe plusieurs années au Bénin où il enregistre avec des ténors tels que Danialou Sagbohan ou Ambroise Fidegnon. Il arrrange aussi des albums notamment celui d'Antoine Dougbé (voir lien). Sur tous ces enregistrements Wasson est remarquable.

Sur ce 33 tours soukous et reggae, Ignace de Souza est à la trompette, Danialou Sagbohan à la batterie et Miguelito aux choeurs, rien que ça. Je regrette seulement que Sagbohan n'execute pas un solo, mais comme il dit: "Je suis au service de l'orchestre, un batteur doit rester humble". Ce numéro 175 du label Satel a été enregistré en 1978.
