Stanislas Tohon (1982)

Stanislas Tohon left us one year ago, on february 26, and he will have had a huge impact on modern Beninese music. I like this son g from 1982, it has something special, could'nt tell.

Stanislas Tohon modernized the traditional Tchinkoumé rhythm and called it "Tchink System". His music is powerfull, all titles emit an energy coming from Tchinkoumé rhythm. The sound is heavy like Tohon himself.

Stanislas Tohon a modernisé le rythme traditionnel Tchinkoumé et l'a renomé le "Tchink System". Je trouve que sa musique est vraiment puissante. Tous les morceaux dégagent une energie propre au Tchinkoumé.

Danialou Sagbohan/Stanislas Tohon & Les Astronautes (1976)

Dear listeners, i'm back but not for best musical reasons. Dau 1 of confinement in Paris and desire to share again. Double sharing thanks to Ogoun Ferraille from Switzerland. Warm thoughts and many thanks to him.
On this obscure single, two stars from the middle 70's are making a fight. On side A, Stanislas Tohon, on side B Danialou Sagbohan. On the middle, the same band : Les Astronautes.
Honestly, we don't recognize Stanislas tohon's style. on the other hand, we recognize Sagbohan's. I think this record was recorded in 1975 or 1976.



Chers auditeurs, je suis de retour mais pas pour des meilleures raisons musicales. Premier jour de confinement à Paris et des envies de repartage. Un double partage car le disque suivant nous vient d'Ogoun Ferraille, Suisse. Pensées complices et grand merci.
Sur cet obscure 45 tours les deux grandes stars de la fin des années 70's s'affrontent. Sur la face A, Stanislas Tohon, sur la face B, Danialou Sagbohan. Et au milieu, un orchestre commun : Les Astronautes. 
Honnêtement, on ne reconnais pas Stanislas Tohon, tout jeune qu'il est. Par contre, tout jeune qu'il est aussi, on reconnait bien le style, la voix, la batterie de Sagbohan Danialou. Je pense que ce disque date de 1975 ou 1976.

STANISLAS TOHON & VIS-A-VIS BAND (1979)

This album is a masterpiece. Totally afrobeat taken from traditional tchinkoume rhythm of Benin that Stanislas Tohon wonderfully modernized. Recorded in Côte d'Ivoire and prroduced by famous Papa Disco, the orchestration, the arrangements and especially the density of the recording make this record unique. It is also very rare and hard to find.

All the songs are good, there is nothing to throw. The new version of "Yallow", that Sam Fan Thomas made known abroad, is completely successful.

Cet album est un chef d'oeuvre. Totalement afrobeat et imprégné du rythme tchinkoumé béninois que Stanislas Tohon a su merveilleusement moderniser. Produit par le plus grand producteur de l'époque en Afrique de l'Ouest, Papa Disco, l'orchestration, les arrangements et surtout la densité de l'enregistrement en font un disque unique et très difficile à trouver.
Tous les morceaux sont bons, il n'y a rien à jeter. La nouvelle version de "Yallow" (que Sam Fan Thomas a fait connaitre à l'international) est totalement aboutie.

I had never seen this album of Stan Tohon before. Recorded in France in the mid 80s, the album contains the famous title "Yallow". Unfortunately there is lack of real battery. In fact, this is beat box era and a bit of flavor is missing.

Je n'avais jamais vu cet album de Stanislas Tohon auparavant. Enregistré en France au milieu des années 80s, l'album contient le fameux titre "Yallow". Il manque malheureusement  une vraie batterie. En effet, c'est l'époque des boites à rythmes et ça manque un peu de saveur.

With all due respect I have for Stanislas Tohon, he crossed a barrier on this album I can not enjoy, that of drum machines. However we find the soul and the spirit of "Tchink System"'s king. I confess I like this record.

Avec tout le respect que j'ai pour Stanislas Tohon, il franchit une barrière que j'ai du mal à apprécier, celle des boites à rythmes. On retrouve néanmoins l'âme et l'esprit du roi du "Tchink System". J'avoue j'aime ce disque.

Tohon Stan: King of Tchink System (1984)

Stanislas Tohon is definitely the king of Tchink System (modernized Tchinkoume rhythm) with its famous Gotta drum and water percussions. Tohon is singular as his music. He is like a thug.

He delivers on this album a third version of "Yallow", a hit that mede him known throughout Africa (you can find the original recording in this post). I especially like the track "Gotta" and the violence of all the drums.

Stanislas Tohon est definitivement le roi du Tchink System (rythme modernisé du Tchinkoumé) avec son fameux tambour Gotta et ses percussions d'eau. Tohon est singulier tout comme sa musique. Il est comme un voyou.

Il nous délivre sur cet album une troisième version de "Yallow", morceau qu'il a fait connaitre dans toute l'Afrique (vous trouverez dans ce courrier l'enregistrement original de ce tube). J'aime particulièrement le titre "Gotta" et la violence de ses rythmes.

The sound is heavy and warrior like Tohon himself.

Je trouve que sa musique est vraiment puissante. Tous les morceaux dégagent une energie propre au Tchinckoumé mais aussi grâce aux musiciens exceptionnels de Stan comme son guitariste Dizi Mageco. Le son est lourd et guerrier à l'image de Tohon.

Stanislas Tohon recorded this single with the "Satelites" orchestra in 1977. Tohon Stan will become famous all over Africa thanks to Sam Fan Thomas, the geat cameroonian singer, who interpreted the title "Yallow" which would become a hit.

In 1978, Stan Tohon created the Tchink-system orchestra. The tchink music style remain tied to the Tchinkoumé tradition, a style of music based on the sacred "water music" that was traditionally used to drive out evil spirits after death. This rhythm can be heard on the title "Africa".
