MARIJATA (Pat Thomas Introduces Marijata)

Born in 1951 in Kumasi, Ghana, the highlife vocalist, Pat Thomas, made his name with his band the Sweet Beans. He began his carreer in 1969 with the Broadway Dance Band, leaving a year later to join the Uhuru Dance Band. Then he played with Ebo Taylor's Blue Monks and finally formed the Sweet Beans in 1973. They released "Faise Lover" in 1974, then split and-reformed as Marijata, releasing Marijata and Pat Thomas Introduces Marijata. What a story to resume this rare and famous album that can be sold more than one thousand dollar.

Apologies hardly necessary. The opening track is resplendent. Marijata is always welcome under any conditions. Thanks for this (and everything).

Thank you again for all your fantastic efforts! The track "brain washing" does not appear on my download - I have right of the nine listed tracks. I am hopeful that the missing track can be found. Best wishes. Chris A

Sorry guys but the title "Brain Washing" was in a very bad shape, so I did not ripped it.

Voodoo Funk Frank must be in disarray now that other people can actually listen to these tracks without shelling out $2000 for one of his copies. Thanks for sharing!!!

Frank said...

Why should I be in disarray? I had posted soundfiles of this entire record, as well as Marijata's first LP on my blog and on the Soulstrut forum. I had also posted mp3s of both records when I sold spare copies on ebay late last year. Yeah, the blue one went for close to $2.000 and this one for $1.500, both were the cleanest copies ever to be offered on ebay and these are very rare and highly desirable and collectible records. This is how the market works, so what's your problem? Are you in disarray you can't afford an original?

Don't worry, I'm re-issuing both records on CD and vinyl.

Merci pour ce disque incroyable... Je n'en avais jamais entendu parler et j'ai du mal à croire qu'il ne soit connu que de quelques connaisseurs et collectionneurs! Et félicitations pour ce site passionnant.

Here's a link to an mp3 of the entire album:

There will also very soon be an official re-issue!

Awesome, didn't realize this album was getting re-issued too. Thought it was just the first and a comp. That's great news, all the comps, greatest hits packages suck. The two Marijata LP's along with the Pat Thomas "Car" LP all deserve stand alone releases. Those guys were too great to deserve anything less! Even though I have my old battered copies, will be nice to have these tracks on a brand new piece of wax.
Fucking A. Thanks!

Been looking for the 'Mother Africa' track forever on vinyl. Looks like it does exist as, Pat Thomas introduces...'
Too scarce and high in price for me!
Do you know if this is reissued and out now on LP?
thanks, Thomas

Just discovered your blog. Cool of you to post this! Been holding my breath for the second Marijata for years now. Everyone should have a copy of this record. Nice that people who can't afford an inflated ebay copy can check it out. Cheers.

Re: 10:38... looking doubtful that this is going to get a release any time soon. A shame really, there are probably people lined up to put this record out but alas. At least fans of the music can find album rips floating around online. Sure beats shelling out a few hundred on eBay.

litlgrey said...

Not even, for example, Academy Records?

Frank said...

We have located the band members and the record will definitely come out on Academy/Voodoo Funk in the near future. We've just been busy with a load of other releases.

litlgrey said...

Oh wow, Frank.
That is awesome.

"In the near future"

lol!

Forgot about this one till stumbling back on this here site. Can't believe they're still talking about it five year's after the fact. Pretty lame. I was lucky enough to pick up a copy back in the 1980s for around $1!

Was just listening to this earlier and started wondering.... Anyone out there know whatever happened to the reissue? Voodoo guy was promising it 5 or 6 years ago. What's the hold up? Surely there must be plenty of other labels who would be happy to release it. The politics in that Afro reissue world are far out.

^ Yes, I remember way back when (think it was more like 7 years ago!) good ol' FG was harking away about re-issuing this long player. For some odd reason this record just randomly popped in my head which is how I ended up here. Was curious if the album ever ended up getting released, apparently not :) Too bad, I guess... In truth, there are already better records out there representing this genre. Think it's more the promise of the "chase" that's kept the lore of this release fresh on some people's minds. At least there are plenty of decent rips floating around for curious listeners to enjoy. Good enough for me anyway. Cheers to this Blog for keeping the files up and sharing the many others.

xx
