Lemed Janvier & AFRICAN ALL STARS (Congo-Bénin/1982)

This is a rare album of Lemed Janvier with African All Stars led by Sam Mangwana. Soukous as usual with Lemed.

Kpedjolemed Janvier was born in 1949 in Cove, benin. he started music at college. his father saw in him the desire to become a musician and asked him to go study at the INZA (National Arts Institute of Zaïre). But Janvier anticipates integrating the Poly-Rythmo orchestra with whom he recorded his first title: "Sais-tu que je t'aime". At the insistence of his father, he joined, in 1979, the orchestra "Les Volcans de la Capitale", which was the national orchestra, and recorded three albums. Finally, he went to study in Zaïre and joined, as singer, the Afrisa International Tabu Rey Rochereau's band. He recorded  three albums: "Mea Culpa", "Akuotowévo" and finally "Lemed in Kinshasa". Lemed janvier passed away on January 11, 2011 at the age of 62.

Papa Wemba & Viva La Musica (Congo/1980)

 Papa Wemba began his career in Congo in 1969 with orchestra Zaïko Langa Langa. In 1977 he created his own band, orchestra Viva La Musica. Papa Wemba became really popular in Za¨ïre during the eighties, he was the main leader the "Sape" movement and recorded many hits like "Analengo"

YIEN'S CABREL (Benin/1982)

Very nice soukous album of Yien's Cabrel, an obscure artist from Benin (another one). I could not guess which band is playing back. This recording honors the famous Porto-Novo's footbal team called "the Dragons". I love the the cover.

Excellent album de soukous composé par Yien's Cabrel, un artiste obscure du Bénin ( encore un). Je n'ai pas deviné quel orchestre l'accompagne. Cet enregistrement rend hommage à la fameuse équipe de football de Porto-Novo, "Les Dragons". J'adore la pochette.

Migan Celestin & Orchestre Les Vodoun (1979)

Here is  another Migan celestin's sp recorded in 1979 which has two particularities: First, The Vodoun's band, i never heard about it (another obscure band of Benin), second, the great singer Miguelito who sings in "Mosaico" title.

Sam Mangwana & Les Dadjes (1980)

Voici encore un exemple de création Béninoise surprenante. Cet album a été composé  et chanté par le célèbre congolais Sam Mangwana, enregistré en Côte D'Ivoire avec l'orchestre Les Dadjes (orchestre béninois du fameux Gnonnas Pedro) et produit sur le label Sodagil du très connu artiste béninois Gilbert Dossou alias Prince Dgib's. Je vous laisse savourer cette bonne mayonnaise.

Here is another example of surprising Beninese creation. This album has been composed and sung by the famous Congolese Sam Mangwana, recorded in Ivory Coast with the band "Les Dadjes" (famous Gnonnas Pedro' band) and on the label Sodagil, from well-known Beninese artist Gilbert Dossou aka Prince's Dgib's. I let you taste this good mayonnaise.

Les Volcans (1977)

What else to say about this great band and this 1977's album, dedicated to Marxist-Leninist revolution. The vinyl quality is excellent and full of gold soukous. I'm a fan of the song "Sota Mofinde". I don't know if Joseph Atchade sings it but sometimes he's beautifully false. Anyway, this album is perfect, "Chauffez les bougies !" (Heat the candles !)

Que dire encore sur cet orchestre génial et sur ce nouvel opus dédié à la révolution marxiste-léniniste. La qualité du vinyle est excellente et l'album regorge de pépites soukous. Je suis fan du morceau "Sota Mofinde", je ne sais pas si c'est Joseph Atchade qui chante mais c'est parfois merveilleusement faux. En tout cas cet album est parfait, "chauffez les bougies !"

MIGAN CELESTIN

Célestin Migan alias Mig-Tino mérite un courrier spécial. Je réunis donc plusieurs univers musicaux composés et chantés par le plus grand guitariste béninois des années 70's. Cette série de disques a été enregistré entre 1975 et 1980. Le premier est inédit sur Oro.

Celestin Migan alias Mig-Tino deserves a special post. Here are different musical worlds composed and sung by the greatest beninese guitarist during the 70's. This set of records were composed between 1975 and 1980. The first is new on Oro.

Célestin Migan était le chef d'orchestre des "Commandos", connus pour avoir longuement accompagné El Rego. Sur ce 45 tours édité sur le label "Columbia", Migan chante en Français. "Je m'en fous" est un superbe rythme cavacha, "Pas de sot métier" est un rythme folklorique qui prône la vie de musicien car "la musique c'est du travail".

Migan Celestin used to be the leader of "The Commandos" band, also known as El Rego's backing band. This single edited on label "Columbia" and Migan sings in french. "Je m'en fous" (I don't care) is a wonderful cavacha rhythm, "Pas de sot métier" (No silly business) is a traditional rhythm which lyrics promote musician lifestyle because "music is a work".

Cet autre 45 tours a été enregistré avec l'orchestre Supermen, une formation qu'a crée Migan après les Commandos. Une face A totalement soukous dans lequel Migan nous dévoile tous ses talents de guitariste. La face B est un rythme agbadja ou là encore la guitare est surprenante.

This other single was recorded with the "Supermen" band, an other orchestra created by Celestin after the "Commandos". Side 1 is a terrible soukous rhythm which reveals Migan's talent as guitarist. Side 2 is an agbadja rhythm with surprising guitar again.

Pour finir en beauté, un album sublime enregistré avec Danialou Sagbohan à la batterie et aux choeurs ainsi que Tidjani Koné au saxophone." Agbeyame" est le titre phare de ce disque, une chanson mélancolique inoubliable. Pour la petite histoire, l'enregistrement s'est fait en une prise.

DISCO 16

To finish off, a sublime album featuring Danialou Sagbohan on drums and backing vocals, and Tidjani Kone on saxophone. This record was edited on famous label Papa Disco. "Agbeyame" is one of the best track, a melancholic and unforgettable song. For the story, the recording was done in one take.

Tchico & l'International Orchestre "African Kings" (Congo/Benin, 1982)

Tchico Tchicaya, famous Congolese singer and composer, recorded this album in Benin with a mixed Congolese and Beninese band. Loubassou Denis "La Cloche" is on guitar solo, Danialou Sagbohan on drums, Gustave Bentho from Poly-Rythmo on bass guitar, Ignace de Souza from Black Santiago on trumpet and finally Miguelito made a appearance playing the role of a jealous Burkinabese husband on track "Sens Interdit chez Tania". Therefore this album brings together the finest musicians from Beninese music for an original soukouss music album.

Orchestre Sympathic de Porto-Novo (ALS 100/1981)

The Sympathic orchestra from Porto-Novo, led by Herman Layele, is part of the major bands of Benin. They recorded five albums on Albarika Store label. The first was recorded in 1978 and had been already posted HERE. This album, the fourth, is rare. It has been released in 1981 and composed by unknown artists: Jean Ngoma Gomez and Jean Marie Efoya.This LP is unfortunately sung in french but the soukous orchestration is very nice.

L'orchestre Sympathic de Porto-Novo, crée par Herman Layele, fait parti des groupes majeures de la scène Béninoise. Ils ont enregistré cinq album sur le label Albarika Store. Le premier a été enregistré en 1978 et a déjà été posté ICI. Cet album, le quatrième, est rare. Il a été produit en 1981 et composé par des artistes totalement inconnus: Jean Ngoma Gomez et Jean Marie Efoya. Si quelqu'un a des informations. L'album est malheureusement entièrement chanté en français mais l'orchestration soukous est très pointue.

Orchestre PICOBY BAND d'Abomey

Orchestra Picoby Band has been already introduced on Oro here, but it deserves a more complete post. The band is from Abomey and was found in 1953. It is one of the oldest band from Benin with Renova Band, also from Abomey or Super Star de Ouidah. Those three bands only recorded EP's. Picoby Band  recorded at least seven 7-inches singles. Here are four of them. Most of the tracks were afro-beat tunes recorded on Lawani Affisoulayi's label Aux Ecoutes and composed by they great Honore Avolonto. It was around 1970.

On the first record, "Dieu Merci" ("Thank's God") is a very nice soukous tune and "Honton Ve Zoun" a powerful jerk, both composed by Honore Avolonto.

Second record is also composed by Honore Avolonto. "Mi Hon Noun Gbeto" is an excellent pachanga with very good congas sound recording. "Ye Houe Deou" is another jerk tune.

On the third record Honore Avolonto composed "Vikou..." which is called soukous but it does not sound like. "Jo Ahi Nou Se" is a great Afro-Beat tune composed by Sanoussi Mouminou but sang by Avolonto.

This record has been recorded on Albarika Store's label and composed by Sanoussi Mouminou. The single "Mi Ma Kpe Dji" is a great afro-beat tune sang by Avolonto. "Lidia" is a nice and cool Highlife tune sang by an anonymous singer. I think that this record was released after 1970.

This record edited on label "Echos Sonores du Bénin" has been composed by Pierre Avohou. The two tracks are beautiful Sato rhythms.

This record is a contribution of Ogoun Ferraille with two wonderful Jerk rhythms: "Me Adominia" and "Houi Hou Mi To". I do not have the reference of this record but Ogoun should reveals it very quickly.

Voici un obscure orchestre congolais qui a enregistré au Bénin. L'orchestre La Baïana tire son nom des éditions La Baïana. Les compositeurs sont Pepe Mabuse et Joli Divos et les morceaux sont chantés par Pepe Mabuse et Steeve Ngondo. La singularité de cet album vient de la présence de Danialou Sagbohan aux congas et rien que pour ça, cet album a une place d'honneur sur Oro.

Here is an obscure congolese band who recorded in Benin during the 70's. The orchestra takes its name from the Baïana label. Composers are Pepe Mabuse and Joli Divos and the songs are sung by Pepe Mabuse and Steeve Ngondo. The uniqueness of the this album comes from the presence of Danialou Sagbohan on congas and just for that this record has its place of honor on Oro.

Here is a rare EP from Poly-Rythmo, recorded before the 1975's revolucion. "Ehouzou Dandan" is very nice soukous tune on both sides (the B-side is mostly instrumental). It is a composition from Clément Mélomé, the "chef d'orchestre".

Kabore Oger & Harmonie Voltaique (Burkina, 1975)

This is a rare single recorded in 1975 by the leading Burkinabe band, "Harmonie Voltaique", and pressed in Benin, as usual during this period. It features an excellent soukous tune with a strong local accent and a mellow ballad.

As you already know, I am not passionate and specialist about Congolese music. This albums interests me more because Black Santiago radiates music. And yes, many Congolese are passed by Benin and the huge Ignace de Souza, head of the Black Santiago, was the most brilliant ambassador of Soukous music in Ghana and Ivory Coast. Benin and Congo met therefore in music.

This album was recorded at Studio Satel of Cotonou in 1980. Lolo Lolitta sings with his comrade Tchico Tchicaya. Comrade, you are Congolese? So get up and dance on the sun of Benin...

Comme vous savez déjà, je ne suis pas passioné et specialiste de musique Congolaise. Cet album m'intéresse plutôt parce que l'orchestre Black Santiago fait rayonner la musique. Et Oui, beaucoup de Congolais sont passés par le Bénin et le brillant Ignace de Souza, chef du Black Santiago, était le plus brillant ambassadeur de la musique Soukous au Ghana et en Côte d'Ivoire. Le Bénin et le Congo devaient donc se rencontrer en musique.

T.P. Poly-Rythmo & Honore Avolonto: A.V.A Promotions N°13

"Honoré Avolonto stands out as of the best and most prolific composers in Benin. There is practically no band in the country he didn't compose for. What is also worth mentioning is that he never formed his own band. He would compose a hit (or more than one) for a group and use that "wave" to tour with them until the hit ran out of steam and then move on to another project". Samy Ben Redjeb.

This album was recorded in 1982 and I suppose that it is one of the last recording with "Papillon", the guitarist, and Yehouessi Leopold, the drummer. They both died at the end of the year 1982.

"Honoré Avolonto est réputé pour être le plus prolifique composeur du Bénin. Il n'y a pas pratiquement aucun groupe dans le pays pour qui il n'a pas composé. On peut noter aussi qu'il n'a jamais formé son propre orchestre. Il composait un tube (ou plusieurs) pour un orchestre et profitait du succès pour tourner avec lui. Lorsque l'engoûtment s'éteignait, Avolonto partait sous d'autres projecteurs." Samy Ben Redjeb.

Cet album a été enregistré en 1982, peu avant la mort de Papillon, le génial guitariste, et Yehouessi Leopold, le batteur des dieux.

Lemed Janvier & Les Volcans: "Feu Vert"

Here is a second album from Lemed Janvier with The "Volcans du Bénin". Lemed Janvier is from Benin but he is known to play congolese soukouss music and sing in congolese language which is quite rare. I think that the "Volcans du Bénin", led by Nestor Hountondji, had the best horn section in the country.
