T.P. POLY-RYTHMO & Avolonto Honoré

Some artists have marked music like like Honoré Avolonto and his particular way of singing, especially on afrobeat. "E So Plait Mi A" is, for me, one of the best songs of Avolonto. Edited first as EP on Albarika Store label.

Honoré Avolonto started his career as a percussionist. The young Tumba player went onto become one of Benin most prolific composer. He composed Benin's most succesfull LP in 1979 (SAT 173). This album was recorded with The Black Santiago but he also composed and sang for Poly-Rythmo and Los Commandos.

Certains artistes ont marqué la musique comme Honoré Avolonto et sa façon unique de chanter, en particulier sur de l'afro-beat. "E So Plait Mi A" est, pour moi, un des meilleurs morceaux d'Avolonto. Sortie d'abord en 45 tours sur Albarika Store.

Honoré Avolonto a commencé sa carrière comme percussionniste. "Tumbiste" qui deviendra un des compositeurs béninois les plus prolifiques. Il a écrit un des albums les plus vendu au Bénin en 1979. Cet album a été enregistré avec l'orchestre Black Santiago, mais Avolonto a aussi travaillé avec l'orchestre Poly-Rythmo ainsi que Los Commandos.

LES SYMPATHICS de Porto-Novo

Orchestra Les Sympathics was created in 1972 by Herman Laleye, the leader of the famous Black Dragons ' orchestra. This Albarika's opus is wonderful and I have been looking after it for a long time. Herman is still alive and sings every sunday in Porto-Novo, Benin. He is more than a singer and a composer. He became Balé. That means that he became chief of a Vodun Society of masks called Egungun, the masks of dead people. This album was recorded in 1978 and it has something special and different from the same period.

L'orchestre Les Sympathics a été fondé en 1972 par Herman Laléyé, le fameux leader de l'orchestre Black Dragons. Ce nouveau chapitre d'Albarika est prodigieux. Je le cherchais depuis un moment et c'est chose faite. Herman (à gauche sur la pochette) est toujours vivant et chante tous les dimanches à Porto-Novo, Bénin. Il est plus qu'un chanteur et compositeur, il est devnu Balé. Cela signifie qu'il est devenu chef de culte Vodoun, celui des revenants et de leur masques puissants: les Egungun. Cet album a été enregistré en 1978 et il a quelque chose de spécial come sa pochette.

Segun Bucknor & His Assembly (Nigeria)

I love this afrobeat tune "Adebo" of Nigerian pianist an guitarist Segun Bucknor.

Segun Bucknor (29 March 1946 – 11 August 2017) was a Nigerian musician and journalist active during the 1960s and 1970s. He was a pianist and guitarist specializing in genres ranging from soul music to pop music and to funk. Through their brief career, Segun Bucknor and the Assembly released a variety of music dealing with Nigerian culture or political influence.

J'adore ce "Adebo", morceau afrobeat "Adebo" du pianiste et guitariste nigérian Segun Bucknor.

Segun Bucknor (29 Mars 1946 - 11 aout 2017) était un musicien et journaliste actif durant les années 60s et 70s. Ses genres musicaux allaient de la soul à la pop an passant par la funk. A travers leur courte carrière, Segun Bucknor & The Assembly ont sorti beaucoup de titres engagés culturellement et politiquement.

MARY AFI USUAH & the South Eastern State Cultural Band - Led by DAN SATCH (Nigeria/1975)

Having attended one of the most prestigious music conservatories in Rome in the ’60’s to study opera singing, Afi Usuah forged ties with a notable array of artists which included the likes of Duke Ellington and Led Zepellin. She forsook a budding and promising career abroad to return home to serve country and flag. Over the years, she mentored and paved the way for a remarkable number of Nigerian female singers.

DAN SATCH

Dan Satch Joseph leader of his The Atomic "8" Dance Band is a pure tone trumpeter and arranger. Dan Satch started playing the trumpet in 1959 and was the trumpeter leader of Bobby Benson & his Jam Session Band until 1961. In 1962 he moved to Aba and formed the Atomic "8" Dance Band.

K. FRIMPONG & His Cubano Fiestas (Ghana/1980)

Another great album shared by Ogoun Ferraille again. Thank you a thousand times to him.

K.Frimpong recorded this album backed by the Cubanos Fiesta was edited in 1980 on Polydor's label. This album is composed of beautiful highlife and afrobeat tunes. As you may notice, the title "Nye Mea" is a remake of "Kyenkyen Bi Adi Mawu". Very interesting piece. To finish, Alhaji K. Frimpong passed away in 2005. Long life to his music and soul...

K.Frimpong enregistre cet album avec l'orchestre The Cubanos Fiesta en 1980 sur le label Polydor. L'album est riche de rythmes highlife et afrobeat. Vous pourrez noter que le morceau "Nye Mea" est un remake de "Kyenkyen Bi Adi Mawu". Album très intéressant  Pour finir avec Alhaji K.Frimpong, sachez qu'il est décédé en 2005. Que âme et sa musique reposent en paix.

K. FRIMPONG & VIS-A-VIS (Ghana/1978)

Here is this the seriously rare album shared by Ogoun Ferraille. Thank you to him.
In the mid-70s, K. Frimpong recorded with two orchestras simultaneously. Let's begin with the Vis-A-Vis band. The first album was recorded in 1977 on the label Probisco Records (KBL 068). It has been reissued later on Makossa International Records (MA 7076). One of the best Vis-A-Vis album.

Vis-A-Vis was led by Isaac Yeboah, based in Kumasi and featuring some of the Ghana's finest musicians of the 70's: Sammy Cropper on lead guitar, Slim Yaw on bass and Kung-fu Kwaku on drums. This other album with Vis-A-Vis was recorded in 1978 on the label Ofori Brothers.

It's always a pleasure to listen to Eskill Lohento's voice backed by Poly-Rythmo. The two sides of this Extented Play record have been composed by Thomas Kouchina, famous unknown artist.

CRIOLO (Brazil/2014)

Criolo est pour moi un compromis entre Notorious Big, Fela Kuti et Bob Marley. Je pèse mes mots. Artiste brésilien aux multiples facettes musicales, Rap, Reggae, Afrobeat, Samba, Jazz, il explose avec son deuxième album en 2011 et devient une référence majeure dans la musique brésilienne. Il a conquis le monde avec un tournée internationale qui a durée deux ans. Il revient avec son troisième album et comme d'habitude il est en écoute gratuite. Criolo sait que la scène l'attend et que son orchestre est assez talentueux pour ne pas être aux services des ventes. Criolo est grand son orchestre encore plus.

The One Man Band / L'Homme Orchestre: DANIALOU SAGBOHAN (Full movie / 2006)

After several years of sleep, I decided to share and give life again to this beautiful portrait. A documentary which I signed images, editing and directing. From 200 to 2007, I followed Danialou Sagbohan throughout Benin. An immersion with one of the famous singer and musician of african continent.
I also dedicate this film to Djibril Sagbohan, the eldest son of Danialou, who participated to the movie, who assisted me ad who tragically died december 12, 2013, during the birthday party of his father.

Après plusieurs années de sommeil, j'ai décidé de redonner vie à ce magnifique portrait sur la toile. Un film dont j'ai signé les images, le montage et la réalisation. De 2000 à 2007, j'ai suivi Danialou Sagbohan dans tout le Bénin. Une immersion avec l'un des plus grand chanteur et musicien africain. 

Je dédicace aussi ce film à Djibril Sagbohan, le fils ainé de Danialou, qui a participé au film, qui m'a assisté et qui est mort tragiquement le 12 décembre 2013, durant la fête anniversaire de son père.

SPECIAL POST: OGASSA (1978-2013)

This record was first released in 1978 on Albarika Store label and reissued on Hot Casa french label in 2013. I invite you to buy this fantastic and obscure record. Ogassa is a band from Porto-Novo, Benin. I never heard a beninese band with such a particular sound. I particularly like "Avale" which was originally composed by Danialou Sagbohan. The only information I have about the band is that  all the members died in a tragic car accident. This record is hugely rare, so buy it ! (Hot Casa Records).

Cet album fut édité sur le label Albarika Store en 1978. I a été réédité en 2013 par le label français Hot Casa. Je vous invite a acheter le disque de ce fantastique et obscure orchestre, Ogassa, qui vient de Porto-Novo, la capitale du Bénin. Ce groupe a un son très particulier. J'aime beaucoup le reprise de Danialou Sagbohan "Avale". La seule information que j'ai sur cet orchestre c'est que tous les membres sont morts dans un tragique accident de voiture. Cet album est extrêmement rare alors achetez le ! (Hot Casa Records)

Orchestre DISCAFRIC BAND & Edia Sophie (1976)

I didn't know that Edia Sophie recorded her famous title "Galunga" with Discafric Band. Beninese music always reserves surprises. The label on the record is in a bad shape so i couldn't make clean pictures. For those who don't know know Edia Sophie I invite you to discover her here.

Sophie Aguidigbadja aka Edia Sophie is the oldest modern Beninese woman singer but also the first with a modern orchestra. She decides to sing in 1965, after hearing a song sung by Nestor Hountondji with Renova Band. She met him and expressed her desire to sing. At the time, it was frowned upon for women to sing in a modern orchestra. With Dansi Zindjo, Renova's percussionist, sophie met the leader, William Basile Cakpo who intergrayes her just after hearing her distinctive voice. Sophie Edia brought a revolution in music system quite daunting because it was difficult to tell the difference between bands like Super Stars de Ouidah, Sunny Black Band or others playing all the same afro-cuban musical style. Sophie later founded her own band, Caméléon Sonore, and recorded famous "Galunga".

Il est en effet difficile à l'époque de faire la différence entre les Super Stars de Ouidah, les Sunny Blacks band ou autre qui jouent tous un même style musical afro-cubain. Plus tard Sophie fonde son propre groupe, "le Caméléon Sonore", et enregistre son fameux titre "Galunga".

I would like to thank Ogoun Ferraille for this wonderful black dragon's contribution. A very rare 10 inches record with the sleeve also. A post revolutionary recording from which "Yeni Houye" title is dedicated to  general Mathieu Kerekou. I love this tune.

Merci encore à Ogoun Ferraille pour cette dragonesque contribution. Un disque très rare  puisque c'est un 78 tours et avec la pochette en prime. Un enregistrement post revolutionnaire dont le titre "Yeni Houye" est un hommage au Général Kérékou. J'adore ce morceau.

I think the title "Mi Ni Non Kpo" will delight djerk rhythm lovers (rhythm imported from the french rock scene) and sakpata rhythm too (inspired by voodoo Sakpata, the god of earth).
Title "Mireill" is a sublime bolero rhythm transported by Lohento Eskill's voice who also composed both titles. Etablissement Disco des Lyriques ' label is totally osbcure and I could not tell when this record was released.

Je pense que le titre "Mi Ni Non Kpo" va ravir le amateurs de rythme jerk, importé de la scène rock française, et de rythme sakpata, inspiré vaudou Sakpata, dieu de la terre.
Le titre "Mireille" est un sublime boléro transporté tout en beauté par la voix de Lohento Eskill qui a composé les deux morceaux. Le label Etablissement Disco des Lyriques est totalement obscure et je ne pourrais vous dire quand ce disque a été enregistré.

DEMOS DENIRAN (Nigeria/1980)

Chers auditeurs, pardon pour cette longue période de mutisme. J'ai travaillé tout l'été sur des documentaires, l'un sur la Guadeloupe et l'autre sur la Namibie. Je ne peux pas vous dire le plaisir que j'ai pris. Je vous tiendrai au courant des dates de diffusion télé.
Je vous fais découvrir aujourd'hui la musique afrobeat de Demos Deniran, un artiste Nigerian très respecté pas des compagnons de routes tels que Sonny Okosun ou Ebenezer Obey qui lui consacreront un album en son hommage intitulé "Final Race".

I invite you to discover Demos Deniran's music (Real name Moses Adeniran). Great afrobeat from Nigeria. Deniran passed on in 1995 but remains highly respected in Nigerian musical and religious circles with stars such as Sonny Okosun and Ebenezer Obey coming out to perform tributes to him, including recording an album called "Final Race".

Demos Deniran a participé au fameux festival culturel africain organisé au Nigeria en 1977. J'ai trouvé un morceau tiré de cet album que je voudrais partager avec vous. Le titre est "FESTAC (Ariya)".

L'autre album que je vous présente a été enregistré en 1980 avec l'orchestre The Luko Resurgento. Un album afrobeat profond et hypnotique. J'adore, tous les morceaux sont excellents.

Orchestre BLACK SANTIAGO & Danialou SAGBOHAN (1972)

Durant l'année 1972, l'orchestre Black Santiago enregistre de nombreux 45 tours sur le label béninois Tropiques Satel. Danialou Sagbohan apparait comme chanteur sur plusieurs titres comme ceux qui suivent. Il faut une oreille aguerrie pour reconnaître la voix de Sagbohan qui est encore fluette mais son aura électrise tous les enregistrements. En 1971, durant 6 mois, le Black Santiago assure la première partie de Fela Ransome Kuti au club Kacadu, à Lagos. Sagbohan est à la batterie. Fela écoute le jeune autodidacte et lui confie après le concert: "Toi, tu es dangereux".

Les deux morceaux de ce disque sont composés par Sebastien Houedanou dit "Pacheco", autre membre singulier du Black Santiago. Mais le morceau "Gbe O Houzou" est chanté par Sagbohan et il est difficile de croire que ce n'est pas lui qui a composé tellement il a d'emprise sur l'enregistrement.Il reste de cette période des enregistrements funk et afrobeat redoutables tels que le morceau Paulina. Sagbohan est aux percussions et aux choeurs.

Sur cet autre disque des Black Santiago, Sagbohan chante sur le titre "Zangbeto". Ce morceau est particulier, on peut dire que c'est le premier morceau d'influence vodou. En effet les "Zangbeto" sont des masques vodou très populaires au Bénin. Bien avant les rythmes sato du Poly-Rythmo et bien plus afrobeat que Fela, Sagbohan imprègne de jazz ce sublime morceau. "Zangbeto" est un titre  révolutionnaire, guerrier. La batterie de Sagbohan et les percussions qui l'accompagne le rendent encore plus génial.

STANISLAS TOHON & VIS-A-VIS BAND (1979)

This album is a masterpiece. Totally afrobeat taken from traditional tchinkoume rhythm of Benin that Stanislas Tohon wonderfully modernized. Recorded in Côte d'Ivoire and prroduced by famous Papa Disco, the orchestration, the arrangements and especially the density of the recording make this record unique. It is also very rare and hard to find.

All the songs are good, there is nothing to throw. The new version of "Yallow", that Sam Fan Thomas made known abroad, is completely successful.

Cet album est un chef d'oeuvre. Totalement afrobeat et imprégné du rythme tchinkoumé béninois que Stanislas Tohon a su merveilleusement moderniser. Produit par le plus grand producteur de l'époque en Afrique de l'Ouest, Papa Disco, l'orchestration, les arrangements et surtout la densité de l'enregistrement en font un disque unique et très difficile à trouver.
Tous les morceaux sont bons, il n'y a rien à jeter. La nouvelle version de "Yallow" (que Sam Fan Thomas a fait connaitre à l'international) est totalement aboutie.

ASSALÉ (Côte d'Ivoire/1980)

Another great album produced and directed by Gilbert Dossou on his Sodogil label. If someone has informations about Assalé who composed and wrote this album I would be grateful. This record is known for the famous afrobeat tune "Ameniwa". Dreadful, dangerous, positive, natural.
