T.P. POLY-RYTHMO & Avolonto Honoré

Some artists have marked music like like Honoré Avolonto and his particular way of singing, especially on afrobeat. "E So Plait Mi A" is, for me, one of the best songs of Avolonto. Edited first as EP on Albarika Store label.

Honoré Avolonto started his career as a percussionist. The young Tumba player went onto become one of Benin most prolific composer. He composed Benin's most succesfull LP in 1979 (SAT 173). This album was recorded with The Black Santiago but he also composed and sang for Poly-Rythmo and Los Commandos.

Certains artistes ont marqué la musique comme Honoré Avolonto et sa façon unique de chanter, en particulier sur de l'afro-beat. "E So Plait Mi A" est, pour moi, un des meilleurs morceaux d'Avolonto. Sortie d'abord en 45 tours sur Albarika Store.

Honoré Avolonto a commencé sa carrière comme percussionniste. "Tumbiste" qui deviendra un des compositeurs béninois les plus prolifiques. Il a écrit un des albums les plus vendu au Bénin en 1979. Cet album a été enregistré avec l'orchestre Black Santiago, mais Avolonto a aussi travaillé avec l'orchestre Poly-Rythmo ainsi que Los Commandos.

And one more LP for Poly-Rythmo, released in 1978 on the essential Albarika Store label. This song "Mede Magnin Messe" is composed and sung by Melomey Clement.

LES SYMPATHICS de Porto-Novo

Orchestra Les Sympathics was created in 1972 by Herman Laleye, the leader of the famous Black Dragons ' orchestra. This Albarika's opus is wonderful and I have been looking after it for a long time. Herman is still alive and sings every sunday in Porto-Novo, Benin. He is more than a singer and a composer. He became Balé. That means that he became chief of a Vodun Society of masks called Egungun, the masks of dead people. This album was recorded in 1978 and it has something special and different from the same period.

L'orchestre Les Sympathics a été fondé en 1972 par Herman Laléyé, le fameux leader de l'orchestre Black Dragons. Ce nouveau chapitre d'Albarika est prodigieux. Je le cherchais depuis un moment et c'est chose faite. Herman (à gauche sur la pochette) est toujours vivant et chante tous les dimanches à Porto-Novo, Bénin. Il est plus qu'un chanteur et compositeur, il est devnu Balé. Cela signifie qu'il est devenu chef de culte Vodoun, celui des revenants et de leur masques puissants: les Egungun. Cet album a été enregistré en 1978 et il a quelque chose de spécial come sa pochette.

Orchestre Super Borgou (Benin)

I thank again Ogoun Ferraille for this record from Super Borgou orchestra. This band and his leader Moussa Mama may be from the north of Benin, different from the south and its many orchestras, but united around pop music like "Ya Bara" or pachanga with "Sou Binin Sara".

Je remercie encore Ogoun Ferraille pour ce disque de l'orchestre Super Borgou. Cet orchestre et son leader, Moussa Mama, sont originaires du nord du Bénin, différent du sud et ses nombreux orchestres, mais résume l'esprit musical du pays réuni autour de la pachanga avec "Soun Binin Sara" ou la pop avec "Ya bara".

Anassoua Jazz de Parakou

Anassoua Jazz de Parakou is an avatar of Anos Band. Alidou Boukary is partly leader of both bands. Those artists of north Benin like Anos Bandn, Anassou Jazz or fabulous Super Borgou, reveal us extremely rich music.

T.P. orchestre POLY-RYTHMO & Yehouessi Leopold (1978)

I think its is time to repost this fantastic LP of Poly-Rythmo. This opus was composed by drummer Leopold Yehouessi who had a huge influence on the band. He participated in the creation of the orchestra in 1965, then called Sunny Black's Band, and his death in 1982, as well as guitarist "Papillon" marks a halt to powerful Poly-Rythmo.

Je pense que c'est le temps de reposter ce sublime album du Poly-Rythmo. Cet opus a été Composé par le batteur, Léopold Yehouessi, qui avait une grande influence sur le groupe. SPECIAL POST: OGASSA (1978-2013)

This record was first released in 1978 on Albarika Store label and reissued on Hot Casa french label in 2013. I invite you to buy this fantastic and obscure record. Ogassa is a band from Porto-Novo, Benin. I never heard a beninese band with such a particular sound. I particularly like "Avale" which was originally composed by Danialou Sagbohan. The only information I have about the band is that  all the members died in a tragic car accident. This record is hugely rare, so buy it ! (Hot Casa Records).

Cet album fut édité sur le label Albarika Store en 1978. I a été réédité en 2013 par le label français Hot Casa. Je vous invite a acheter le disque de ce fantastique et obscure orchestre, Ogassa, qui vient de Porto-Novo, la capitale du Bénin. Ce groupe a un son très particulier. J'aime beaucoup le reprise de Danialou Sagbohan "Avale". La seule information que j'ai sur cet orchestre c'est que tous les membres sont morts dans un tragique accident de voiture. Cet album est extrêmement rare alors achetez le ! (Hot Casa Records)

ANOS BAND de Parakou

Here is a Beninese band I have never spoken about : Anos Band de Parakou. This orchestra was founded by singer and composer Boukary Alidou in 1973. Boukary is also band leader of Anassoua Jazz band which will be the subject of a later post. Both bands recorded at the same time and on same Albarika Store's label. Anos band recorded at least six 7 inches on Albarika so this post deserves to be enriched. I f any of you have other records to share, it would a pleasure to post them.

Voici un orchestre béninois dont je n'ai jamais parlé: Anos Band de Parakou. Cet orchestre a été fondé par le chanteur Boukary Alidou en 1973. Boukary est aussi le leader de l'orchestre Anassoua Jazz de Parakou qui sera le sujet d'un courrier ultérieur. Ces deux orchestres enregistrent à la même époque et sur le même label Albarika Store. Anos Band a enregistré au moins six 45 tours le label Albarika, ce courrier méritera donc d'être enrichi. Si parmi vous quelqu'un possède d'autres disques, je les partagerai avec plaisir.

The second record offers a very interesting pachenga rhythm ("Kiasse Workan Giba") and a soul rhythm ("We N'Sou Garo). Both sogs are composed and sung in Dindi language by Boukari Alidou.

The two following titles were sent to me by Ogoun Ferraille. As always, Ogoun shares with us two beautiful pieces. First is "Lamatou" the side 2 of ASB (Side 1 is a rumba "Abininze") 144 and second is masterpiece "Kimikssoute Kiyo" which I don't know the reference.

Les deux titres qui suivent m'ont été envoyé par Ogoun Ferraille et  comme toujours Ogoun partage avec nous deux superbes perles : la première est "Lamatou" est la face B du disque ASB 144 (la face A étant une rumba "Abininze") qui a été enregistré, je pense, sur Albarika et enfin "Kimikssoute Kiyo", un petit chef d'oeuvre.

Chief Fasco Dagama & His Super Performers (Nigeria/1979)

Chief Fasco Dagama may be from Nigeria or Benin his juju music album edited on Beninese Albarika Store label remains excellent. Gangan or talking-drum lovers will be delighted.

"This one's still on rotation. I hear bits of Alhadji Haruna Ishola and gamelan in the rhythm, but the guitars really take it somewhere else. Polytonality, microtonality or faulty tuning, I can't get enough whatever it is. And does his name reference Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama? Thanks again for this treasure."

Chief Fasco Dagama peut être Nigerian ou Béninois, son album de Juju music édité sur le label Béninois Albarika Store reste excellent. Les amateurs de tambour Gangan ou "talking drum" seront enchantés.

Orchestre BLACK DRAGONS de Porto-Novo

Orchestre Black Dragons de Porto-Novo deserves a special post. The band takes its name from the football team called 'Dragons of Oueme" and was founded by famous singer, composer and saxophonist Nestor Hountondji. Later the band became Les Sympathics de Porto-Novo previously posted here.

L'orchestre Black Dragons de Porto-Novo mérite un courrier special. Ce groupe tire son nom de l'équipe de de football "Les Dragons de l'Oueme" et a été fondé par le célèbre  chanteur et saxophoniste Nestor Hountondji. Par la suite le groupe est devenu Les Sympathics de Porto-Novo que vous pouvez consultez ici.

The Black Dragons recorded their first songs in the late 60s in Nigeria on labels like Decca. This single has been released for the sale and distribution by the gaz company of Porto-Novo, Dahomey. As usual at this time: rumba rhythm...

This other record is my favourite. Always composed and sung by Nestor Hountondji, the titke "Amon Mi Keledje" is a marvel. On record's label, you can read "French" rhythm but it is a pure Beninese rhythm between jerk, afrobeat and fanfare.

Cet autre disque est mon préféré. Toujours composé et chanté par Nestor Hountondji, le titre "Amon Mi Keledje" est une pure merveille. Sur le label, vous pouvez lire rythme "français" mais c'est une pure rythme béninois entre Jerk, afrobeat et fanfare.

T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo & Vincent Ahehehinnou (1974)

This N°224 record on the label Albarika Store is a jewel. Composed and sung by Vincent Ahehehinnou, the title "Cherie Oyo" deserves a better rhythm description as Bossa Nova which is written on the record label. The song "Nan Man Nan" is as ambitious as the first, a traditional and "folkloric" modernized rhythm. Vinent has a voice as warm and captivating as that of Eskill Lohento.

Composé et chanté par Vincent Ahehehinnou, le titre "Cherie Oyo" mérite un meilleur qualificatif rythmique que "Bossa Nova" qui figure sur le label du disque. Le titre "Nan Man Nan" est aussi ambitieux que le premier, un ryhtme traditionnel et "folklorique" modernisé. Vincent a une voix aussi chaude et envoutante que celle d'Eskill Lohento.

Renova Band d'Abomey & Edia Sophie

Renova Band was featured in a previous post but the singer Edia Sophie had not been mentioned. Sophie Aguidigbadja aka Edia Sophie is the oldest modern Beninese woman singer but also the first with a modern orchestra. She decides to sing in 1965, after hearing a song sung by Nestor Hountondji with Renova Band. She met him and expressed her desire to sing. At the time, it was frowned upon for women to sing in a modern orchestra. With Dansi Zindjo, Renova's percussionist, sophie met the leader, William Basile Cakpo who intergrayes her just after hearing her distinctive voice. Sophie Edia brought a revolution in music system quite daunting because it was difficult to tell the difference between bands like Super Stars de Ouidah, Sunny Black Band or others playing all the same afro-cuban musical style. Sophie later founded her own band, Caméléon Sonore, and recorded famous "Galunga".

Renova band a été présenté dans un précédent courrier mais la chanteuse Edia Sophie n'avait pas été mentionnée. Sophie Aguidigbadja alias Edia Sohpie est la doyenne des chanteuses modernes Béninoises mais aussi la première à avoir pris le micro avec un orchestre moderne. Elle décide de chanter en 1965, après avoir entendu un morceau chanté par Nestor Hountondji au sein du Renova Band. Elle le rencontre et lui fait part de son désir de chanter. A l'époque, il était très mal vu pour une femme de chanter dans un orchestre moderne. Grâce à Dansi Zindjo, percussionniste du Renova, Sophie fait la connaissance du chef d'orchestre, William Basile Cakpo, qui l'intègre immédiatement après avoir écouté sa voix si particulière. Sophie Edia apporte une révolution dans un système musical assez rébarbatif. Il est en effet difficile à l'époque de faire la différence entre les Super Stars de Ouidah, les Sunny Blacks band ou autre qui jouent tous un même style musical afro-cubain. Plus tard Sophie fonde son propre groupe, "le Caméléon Sonore", et enregistre son fameux titre "Galunga".

The first record was recorded in 1967 on Philips label. The song "Oni Yegua" is sakara rhythm composed by William Basile and "Misetogbe" is a bolero composed by Seraphin Bassa. Sorry for the poor sound quality.

The second is an EP which was posted by the very nice  MUSIC CITY blog was recorded in 1973 on the Impressions Sonores du Bénin label (this date was written on the back cover). The 4 songs were composed by Toussaint Loko and sung by Edia Sophie.

Le deuxième disque, longue durée, qui a été posté par le génial blog MUSIC CITY, a été enregistré en 1973 sur le label Impressions Sonores du Bénin (cette date figurait au dos de la pochette). Les  4 morceaux ont été composés par Toussaint Loko et chantés par Sophie Edia.


Finally the last, still posted by MUSIC CITY, is the best for me. It was probably recorded in 1969 on Albarika Store label. The tilte "Adjanouvi" (and not "De Eglo Kanlhuin" as mentioned) was composed by Edia Sophie and remains to this day the most famous master piece from the diva. Unfortunately, there is no rip of Side 2.

AS 5001

Enfin le dernier, toujours posté par Music City, est pour moi le meilleur. Il a été enregistré vraisemblablement en 1969 sur le label Albarika Store. Le titre "Adjanouvi" (et non comme il est imprimé "De Eglo Kanlhuin") a été composée par Edia Sophie et demeure jusqu'à ce jour, le plus célèbre morceau de la Diva. Malheureusement la face B n'a pas été postée.

El Rego & Ses Commandos (ALS 29/1976)

Théophile Do Rego aka El Rego, born in 1937, is one of the oldest Beninese singer still alive. He is 50-years career and the father of funk. He has released, according to him, eight SP's, four LP's, four tapes and 5 CD's. The album that I present, released in 1976, is a tribute to the military and Marxist-Leninist revolution from Mathieu Kerekou. It also includes older pieces recorded before 1976.

Petite piqure de rappel. Théophile Do Rego alias El Rego, né en 1937, est l'un des plus ancien chanteur Béninois encore vivant. Il est le père de la punk et en 50 ans de carrière, il a sorti , selon ses dires, huit 45 tours, quatre 33 tours, quatre cassettes et 5 CD. L'album que je vous présente, sorti en 1976, est un hommage à la révolution Marxiste-Léniniste du général Mathieu Kerekou. Il regroupe aussi des morceaux plus anciens.

Orchestre Sympathic de Porto-Novo (ALS 100/1981)

The Sympathic orchestra from Porto-Novo, led by Herman Layele, is part of the major bands of Benin. They recorded five albums on Albarika Store label. The first was recorded in 1978 and had been already posted HERE. This album, the fourth, is rare. It has been released in 1981 and composed by unknown artists: Jean Ngoma Gomez and Jean Marie Efoya.This LP is unfortunately sung in french but the soukous orchestration is very nice.

L'orchestre Sympathic de Porto-Novo, crée par Herman Layele, fait parti des groupes majeures de la scène Béninoise. Ils ont enregistré cinq album sur le label Albarika Store. Le premier a été enregistré en 1978 et a déjà été posté ICI. Cet album, le quatrième, est rare. Il a été produit en 1981 et composé par des artistes totalement inconnus: Jean Ngoma Gomez et Jean Marie Efoya. Si quelqu'un a des informations. L'album est malheureusement entièrement chanté en français mais l'orchestration soukous est très pointue.

Gbofan Ernest Kinhouande (ALS 52/1978)

Il y a longtemps que la musique traditionnelle Béninoise n'avait pas été évoquée. Voici un obscure chanteur et compositeur, Ernest Gbofan, adepte du rythme Tchinkoumé,un rythme souvent enregistré sur le label Albarika Store. Cet enregistrement date de 1978. Le Tchinkoumé est toujours aussi reconnaissable avec ses percussions d'eau et sa gourde Gota que l'on distingue bien sur la photo jointe.

Orchestre PICOBY BAND d'Abomey

Orchestra Picoby Band has been already introduced on Oro here, but it deserves a more complete post. The band is from Abomey and was found in 1953. It is one of the oldest band from Benin with Renova Band, also from Abomey or Super Star de Ouidah. Those three bands only recorded EP's. Picoby Band  recorded at least seven 7-inches singles. Here are four of them. Most of the tracks were afro-beat tunes recorded on Lawani Affisoulayi's label Aux Ecoutes and composed by they great Honore Avolonto. It was around 1970.

On the first record, "Dieu Merci" ("Thank's God") is a very nice soukous tune and "Honton Ve Zoun" a powerful jerk, both composed by Honore Avolonto.

Second record is also composed by Honore Avolonto. "Mi Hon Noun Gbeto" is an excellent pachanga with very good congas sound recording. "Ye Houe Deou" is another jerk tune.

On the third record Honore Avolonto composed "Vikou..." which is called soukous but it does not sound like. "Jo Ahi Nou Se" is a great Afro-Beat tune composed by Sanoussi Mouminou but sang by Avolonto.

This record has been recorded on Albarika Store's label and composed by Sanoussi Mouminou. The single "Mi Ma Kpe Dji" is a great afro-beat tune sang by Avolonto. "Lidia" is a nice and cool Highlife tune sang by an anonymous singer. I think that this record was released after 1970.

This record edited on label "Echos Sonores du Bénin" has been composed by Pierre Avohou. The two tracks are beautiful Sato rhythms.

This record is a contribution of Ogoun Ferraille with two wonderful Jerk rhythms: "Me Adominia" and "Houi Hou Mi To". I do not have the reference of this record but Ogoun should reveals it very quickly.

Orchestre Les Mongols de Cotonou

I would like to relay a post from Jammagica blog about "Les Mongols" orchestra from Cotonou. It also allows me to put this new band on Oro label. "Les Mongols have recorded at least three EP's on Albarika label, the ASB 102 and 122, and therefore this ASEP 1024. An obscure band, difficult to hear, thank you Jammagica.

Je voudrai relayer un courrier du blog Jammagica sur l'orchestre "Les Mongols de Cotonou". Il me permet aussi de labeliser ce nouveau groupe sur Oro. "Les Mongols" ont enregistré au moins trois 45t sur le label Albarika, l'ASB 102 et 122 et donc celui-ci l'ASEP 1024. Un orchestre obscure, difficile à entendre. Merci Jammagica...
