SPECIAL POST: SAGBOHAN DANIALOU

For a long time, i wanted to post a special article on Sagbohan's traditional music. Danialou is still the only artist in Benin to make a living from his music without new studio album recordings. And not with modern music but traditional. Indeed, he is very much in demand for ceremonies (Vodoun ceremonies, burials or even weddings).
During the 2000's, Sagbohan recorded several CDs of traditional music. The songs are recorded in studio but often on live conditions. The pieces are therefore medleys.
The most specific rhythm of Sagbohan is Kakagbo rhythm. A rhythm of Goun culture, quite close to Yorouba culture. "Kaka" is the bamboo in Goun language, but also the instrumental base of Kakagbo.



Depuis longtemps je voulais poster un article conséquent sur Sagbohan et la musique traditionnelle. Danialou est encore le seul artiste, au Bénin, à vivre de sa musique sans enregistrer de nouveaux albums. Non pas de sa musique "moderne" mais traditionnelle. En effet, il est très sollicité pour des cérémonies (enterrements, mariages, fêtes religieuses) dans les quelles il ne joue que traditionnel.

Durant les années 2000's, Sagbohan a édité plusieurs CD de musiques traditionnelles. Les morceaux sont enregistrés en studio mais souvent dans des conditions de live. Les morceaux sont donc de longues durées et sous forme de medley.

Le rythme le plus spécifique à Sagbohan est le Kakagbo. Un rythme de la culture Goun, très proche de la culture yorouba. "Kaka" est le bambou en langue Goun, mais aussi le socle instrumental du rythme Kakagbo. 

In 2000, we filmed and recorded in live stereo (with a great sound engineer) along the Ouémé River, on a sacred island.  We had been there by boat with the band and the crew. We recorded an unreleased folk song but above all a Kakagbo rhythm to please the "neighbors" who came to listen the master.

Nous avons filmé et enregistré ce rythme en stéréo (avec amplificateur à lampe)  enregistré live, en 2000, le long du fleuve Ouémé. Nous avons pris une grande pirogue avec l'orchestre et l'équipe de tournage pour rejoindre une forêt sacrée isolée sur une île. Nous avons enregistré deux morceaux folk inédits mais surtout un rythme kakagbo pour faire plaisir aux "voisins" venus en masse pour écouter le maitre.

Sagbohan plays many different traditional rhyhms of southern Benin, like west rhythms which are also played in Togo, a country which is more a cousin than a neighbor.

Sagbohan et son orchestre maitrisent différents rythmes du sud Bénin, comme les rythmes de l'Ouest, que l'on jouent aussi au Togo, pays plus cousin que voisin.


In 2004, I produced traditional song's clip "Hoho Gbédji", a voodoo song modernized by Sagbohan. In this clip you will see Achina voodoo ceremonies. A specific cult of Goun community. During the day of the shooting Sagbohan came to visit and was invited to play with the sacred drum called Kpahoule (same drum as Sagbohan's). En 2004, je réalise le clip  du morceau  traditionnel "Hoho Gbedji", morceau vodoun réactualisé par Sagbohan. Dans ce clip figure les adeptes du culte Vodoun Achina. Un culte spécifique à la communauté Goun. Le jour de ces cérémonies, Sagbohan est venu faire une visite. In 1998, Sagbohan took part of Lucky peolple Center collective through the incredible documentary "Lucky People Center International" which I invite you to watch in this post. For the movie, Sagbohan had built a battery of traditional drums.

The One Man Band / L'Homme Orchestre: DANIALOU SAGBOHAN (Full movie / 2006)

After several years of sleep, I decided to share and give life again to this beautiful portrait. A documentary which I signed images, editing and directing. From 200 to 2007, I followed Danialou Sagbohan throughout Benin. An immersion with one of the famous singer and musician of african continent.
I also dedicate this film to Djibril Sagbohan, the eldest son of Danialou, who participated to the movie, who assisted me ad who tragically died december 12, 2013, during the birthday party of his father.

Après plusieurs années de sommeil, j'ai décidé de redonner vie à ce magnifique portrait sur la toile. Un film dont j'ai signé les images, le montage et la réalisation. De 2000 à 2007, j'ai suivi Danialou Sagbohan dans tout le Bénin. Une immersion avec l'un des plus grand chanteur et musicien africain. 

Je dédicace aussi ce film à Djibril Sagbohan, le fils ainé de Danialou, qui a participé au film, qui m'a assisté et qui est mort tragiquement le 12 décembre 2013, durant la fête anniversaire de son père.

LUCKY PEOPLE CENTER INTERNATIONAL feat. Danialou Sagbohan

I want to share this film, produced in 1998, for two reasons. The first is that Danialou Sagbohan participated in the shooting and his music has an important place in the film. You can recognize him on the picture, in a blue suit, in front of his battery of traditional percussions.

The second reason is that this film has changed my editor's life. Director, Joahn Soderberg is simply a genius of editing. He is the precursor of "mashup" which consists in composing a melody with pre-existing images and sounds.I also invite you to discover the fabulous tv-channel of master Johan Soderberg.

L'homme Orchestre: Danialou Sagbohan

Je voudrais partager ce film, produit en 1998, pour deux raisons. La première est que Danialou Sagbohan a participé au tournage et que sa musique a une place importante dans le film. Ci-joint une photo de Sagbohan en costume bleu devant sa batterie de percussions traditionnelles.

La deuxième raison est que ce film a changer ma vie de monteur. Le réalisateur, Johan Soderberg est tout simplement un génie du montage. Il est le précurseur du "mashup" qui consiste à composer une mélodie avec des images et des sons pré-existants. Je vous invite à découvrir l'extraordinaire chaine télé du maitre Johan Soderberg.

VOODOO: MOUNTED BY THE GODS

Long time ago that i wanted to share this movie with you. A documentary directed by famous switzerland photographer Alberto Venzago.
In 2000 I met him in Benin, he was shooting, like me, his documentary about voodoo religion. I was impressed by his story. He has been shooting for 10 years a child who was chosen to become a voodoo priest. Mighty and sublime film produced by Wim Wenders, written by Kit Hopkins and music by Jochen Schmidt-Hambrock.

Il y a longtemps que je voulais partager ce film avec vous. Un documentaire particulièrement bien réalisé par le grand photographe reporter Suisse, Alberto Venzago.

Au passage de l'an 2000, je l'ai rencontré au Bénin, il réalisait et cadrait, comme moi, un documentaire sur la religion vaudou. J'ai été impressionné par son histoire. Cela faisait 10 ans qu'il suivait un enfant promis au titre de prêtre vaudou. Un film puissant et sublime produit par Wim Wenders, écrit par Kit Hopkins et une musique de Jochen Schmidt-Hambrock.

Vodun Music: ASO

Je voudrais revenir aux sources et aux valeurs du blog Oro: Partager de la musique. Notamment la musique Vodoun. Beaucoup ne savent pas que je suis documentariste, que j'ai produit et réaliser plusieurs films sur la religion "Vodun" au Bénin.

Aso est un fétiche Vodoun et un instrument de musique unique, le plus grand balafon dans le monde. C'est un "double xylophone sur fosse" comme l'a nommé le musicologue Gilbert Rouget lorsque il l'a entendu et photographié à Porto-Novo en 1952. Il ne reste plus qu'un seul Aso au Bénin et je vous offre le seul enregistrement existant. En effet, Aso est un fétiche très particulier qui ouvre et clôture les cérémonies du Vodoun Achina. En 2002, j'ai été autorisé à enregistrer et aujourd'hui partager cette musique chargée d'esprits et terriblement puissante. Son instrument principale est un double balafon géant creusé dans la terre. Les deux batteurs se font face, le grand exécute la rythmique, le petit les harmoniques.

I want to return to the sources and values of Oro: Share music, including music from Vodun religion. Many do not know that I'm a documentary filmmaker. I produced several documentaries about Vodun in Benin.

Aso is a voodoo fetish and unique musical instrument, the biggest balafon in the world. It is a "double xylophone dug in the earth" as musicologist named it when he heard and shot it in 1952. There remains only one Aso in Benin and I offer the only existing recording. Indeed, Aso is a very particular fetish that opens and closes ceremonies of Vodun Achina. In 2002, I was allowed to to film and record, and share, this music loaded with spirits and terribly powerful. Its main instrument is dual giant balafon dug in the ground. The two drummers face each other, the big executes the rhythmic, the small harmonics.
