El Rego & Son Ensemble Typique (1968)

El Rego recorded this EP around 1968. It is significant because it contains three titles with different styles and rhythms. I personally like bluesy "Bambino-Blue". This record has already been posted in 2009 on Worlservice and I think its vinyl's quality is better. It is up to you.

El Rego a du enregistré ce disque vers 1968. Il est très appréciable car les trois morceaux qu'il contient ont chacun leur propre styles. J'aime personnellement le blues de "Bambino-Blue". Ce disque a déjà été posté en 2009 sur Worldservice et je pense que la qualité de son vinyle est meilleure. C'est à vous de juger.

Siagbo Dieudonné Eddie & Martine Blanchelle (Togo)

Dear friends, Iwork a lot right now and I do not have time to post records. I am sure you will love this one, composed and sung by togolese artits Eddie Siagbo Dieudonné and  Martine Blanchelle backed by El Rego & Ses Commandos band. A previous recording on same label has already been posted here.

Nestor Hountondji / El Rego & ORCHESTRE LES DOYENS (1980)

Je remercie Jaime, fidel auditeur, pour ce disque très rare trouvé sur Youtube. Nestor Hountondji est le compositeur et El Rego le chanteur. Ils sont accompagnés par l'orchestre Les Doyens, un groupe inconnu sur Oro. Un disque afrobeat que je trouve inspiré par Fela & Egypt 80.

El Rego & Ses Commandos (1970)

It took several months to gather some of "El Rego and His Commandos" records on beninese label Aux Ecoutes. At the time, there was no recording studio in Benin, artists had to go recording in Nigeria. Full of spirits... 

Il m'a fallu plusieurs mois pour réunir une partie des disques enregistrés sur le label "Aux Ecoutes" par le père de la funk béninoise, Téophile Do Rego alias El Rego.

I begin with N°9, composed and sung by Daniel Martin. I do not know this artist but I love his hybrid and original song "Dignovy Din Ton Le". It sounds like afro-brazilian "samba". Title "Sur le Sable de la Plage" ("On the sand of the beach") is a slow sung in French. Note that the band is called "El Rego de Cotonou".

Je commençe par le N°9 composé et chanté par Daniel Martin. Je ne connais pas cet artiste mais je suis fan de son morceau "Dignovy Din Ton Le", original et hybride. J'ai l'impression d'entendre un rythme Afro-Brésilien. "Sur le sable de la plage" est un slow chanté en français. A noter que l'orchestre a pour nom provosoire " El Rego de Cotonou".

The N°10 is sung and composed by Charles Rodriguez. The band still has another name: "El Rego & Ses Astronautes". The title "Conseil Présidentiel" is a cara-cara rhythm which pays tribute to president Hubert Maga, father of Independence who did a lot for modern music between 1970 to 1972.

Le N°10 est chanté et composé par Charles Rodriguez. L'orchestre porte encore un autre nom: "El Rego & ses Astronautes". Le titre "Conseil Présidentiel" est un ryhtme cara-cara qui rend hommage au Président Hubert Maga.

It is the arrival of prodigious guitarist Celestin Migan on N°13 that makes the band takes its final name of "El Rego and his Commandos". The songs are composed and sung by him. I particulary like "Ne m'attends plus" (Don't expect me no more) and tremendous Migan's guitar.

Les morceaux sont composés et chantés par Migan. j'aime particulièrement "Ne m'attends plus" un morceau qualifié de biguine. Vous aprécierez la sublime guitare de Celestin Migan.

Number 15 is known for its soul "Hessa" composed by Behanzin A.Hendrix. This piece is sublime. The other song "Ke Amon - Gbetchea" is a slow sung in Fon language.

Le N°15 est connu pour son titre soul "Hessa" composé par Behanzin A.Hendrix. Ce morceau est sublime est peut faire danser n'importe quel occidental. L'autre morceau "Ke Amon - Gbetchea" est un slow chanté en langue Fon.

N°16 is also known for the song "Cholera". Both tracks wrtitten by the famous Honore Avolonto, singer and composer for other bands as Poly-Rythmo ore Black Santiago.

Le N°16 est aussi connu pour le morceau "Cholera". Les deux titres ont été composés par le célèbre Honoré Avolonto, chanteur et compositeur pour d'autres orchestres comme Poly-Rythmo et Black Santiago.

N°17 is also composed by Honore Avolonto who perfectly cut his teeth with the lengendary El Rego & Ses Commandos. Those last two records have been published by EMI. Personally, I love the track "Do Do Baya" and Celestine Migan's guitar flying over afro-cuban rhythms.

Le N°17 est aussi composé par Honoré Avolonto qui a parfaitement fait ses armes dans le mythique El Rego et Ses Commandos. Ces deux derniers disques ont été édités par EMI. Personnellement, j'adore le morceau "Do Do Baya" et la guitare de Migan Celestin qui survole les rythmes afro-cubains.

Moving to N°21, composed by Sebastian called "Pacheco". Title "Towe Nonvi Ku" is a great highlife arranged in a typically Beninese way. Unfortunatly, I don't have side 2, If anybody owns it...

Passons au N°21, composé par Sebastien dit "Pacheco". "Nonvi Towe Ku" est un excellent highlife arrangé à la sauce Béninoise. Malheureseument, je n'ai pas la face B, si quelqu'un la posssède...

N°22 is still composed by guitarist Celestin Migan and I must say that both songs are amazing. Migan passes from rumba to afro-beat like a monkey from one tree to another.

Le N°22 est encore composé par le guitariste Migan Céléstin et je dois dire que les deux morceaux sont prodigieux. Migan passe de la rumba à l'afro-beat comme un singe d'un arbre à l'autre.

N° 23 is the only one composed by El Rego himself, knowing that he has recorded only height singles. "Chérie Lucia" is a bolero that prevails and "Dis Moi Oui" (Tell me on) is an afro-beat pearl sung in beautiful french. Again guitar and keyboard are tremendous.

Le N°23 est le seul, présenté, composé par El Rego lui-même sachant qu'il a enregistré que huit 45 tours. "Chérie Lucia" est un boléro qui emporte et "Dis-Moi Oui" est une perle afro-beat chantée en français. Là encore la guitare et le clavier nous transportent.

Finally, N° 25, which was partially posted by Radiodifusion Internasionaal blog, is my favorite. Unfortunatly, I don'y have informations about the composer.

El Rego & Ses Commandos (ALS 29/1976)

Théophile Do Rego aka El Rego, born in 1937, is one of the oldest Beninese singer still alive. He is 50-years career and the father of funk. He has released, according to him, eight SP's, four LP's, four tapes and 5 CD's. The album that I present, released in 1976, is a tribute to the military and Marxist-Leninist revolution from Mathieu Kerekou. It also includes older pieces recorded before 1976.

Petite piqure de rappel. Théophile Do Rego alias El Rego, né en 1937, est l'un des plus ancien chanteur Béninois encore vivant. Il est le père de la punk et en 50 ans de carrière, il a sorti , selon ses dires, huit 45 tours, quatre 33 tours, quatre cassettes et 5 CD. L'album que je vous présente, sorti en 1976, est un hommage à la révolution Marxiste-Léniniste du général Mathieu Kerekou. Il regroupe aussi des morceaux plus anciens.

El Rego & Ses Commandos (Radio Dahomey, 1969)

Theophile Do Rego, known as "El Rego" was born May 3, 1936 in Porto-Novo, Dahomey. He grew up in Senegal and started his musical career in Burkina Faso with the orchestra "L'Harmonie Voltaïque". He returned to Benin (Dahomey) in 1961 and founded his first band, "La Filda", then his "Commandos". El Rego is a dandy who loves beautiful women. He had even once owned a "girls club". Passionate of boxing, he has organized numerous battles in Benin. He is now president of a regional boxing league. In July 2010, Theophile Do Rego has announced the end of his musical career.

This record, produced by the label "Radio Dahomey", is offered by the great Jam Magica's blog. It has been composed (except the title "Kpon Fila", composed by El Rego) by a little known artist: Vincent Olla. The title "Vive Le Renouveau" ("Long Life Revival") is an original and hybrid blues.

Passionné de boxe, il a organisé de nombreux combats au Bénin. Il est aujourd'hui président d'un ligue de boxe régionale. Au moi de Juillet, il a annonçé la fin de sa carrière musicale.

Ce disque, enregistré en 1969 par le label Radio Dahomey, nous est offert par le grand blog Jam Magica. Il a été composé (excépté le titre "Kpon Fila", composé par El Rego) par un artiste peu connu: Vincent Olla. Le titre "Vive Le Renouveau" et un Blues original et Hybride.

On this very nice EP, Siagbo Dieudonne Eddie composed and song. The orchestra is that of El Rego, the famous "Commandos". Siagbo seems to be from Togo.

Germaine Jourias & Los Commandos (Togo/1970)

Germaine Jourias was born in Togo in 1937. She recorded this EP, the first one, with the great singer El Rego and His Commando's orquestra in 1967. This very good highlife title made her quickly famous. She died in August 2009.
