Noel & Mathilde (Benin/1985)

I would like to thank Greg de Villanova for sharing those new beninese discoveries. here are Noel and Mathilde, an absolutely obscure salsero couple from the 80's.

Super Doeths (Nigeria/1985)

Je voudrais remercier Domantas pour le partage de ce disque hyper funky des Super Doeths du Nigeria. J'espère que vous apprécierez car je ne poste pas souvent des disques funk.

I would like to thank Domantas for sharing this funky record from the Super Doeths of Nigeria. I hope you will enjoy because I do not post often funk music records.

The duo Super Doeths described their sound as “Afro-funk,” but showed a keen interest in the burgeoning hip-hop scene, quoting Whodini’ “Five Minutes of Funk” and namechecking Run-DMC in the “Sucker MCs”-inspired eponymous theme song. Produced by legendary rock guitarist Felix “Feladey” Odey.

Stanislas Tohon (1985)

I had never seen this album of Stan Tohon before. Recorded in France in the mid 80s, the album contains the famous title "Yallow". Unfortunately there is lack of real battery. In fact, this is beat box era and a bit of flavor is missing.

Je n'avais jamais vu cet album de Stanislas Tohon auparavant. Enregistré en France au milieu des années 80s, l'album contient le fameux titre "Yallow". Il manque malheureusement une vraie batterie. En effet, c'est l'époque des boites à rythmes et ça manque un peu de saveur.

Sam Fan Thomas (Cameroon/1985)

J'ai souvent parlé de Sam Fan Thomas car il fait partie intégrante de l'histoire de la musique Béninoise. Il a souvent enregistré sur le label Satel et a repris des chansons d'auteur béninois qu'il a exporté dans le monde. Cet album enregistré en 1985 n'est pas le meilleur pour moi, à cause de la batterie électronique qui me procure des électrochocs.

I have often spoken of Sam Fan Thomas because he is a part of music from Benin. He has recorded on the label Satel, picked songs composed by Beninese authors for exporting them worldwide. This album recorded in 1985 is not the best for me, because of the electronic drum that gives me electric shocks.

Houezenou Boureima (Kpalongo)

Let's continue our journey through the traditional music of Benin Albarika Store label. This number 64 of Boureima Houezenou presents the Kpalongo rhythm. Some say that this rhythm was born in Ghana during the 70s and the other that it came from Benin. Regardless this music is dynamic and hypnotic. The voices are dense and punctuated by the Gangan drum which indicates the Yoruba influense of this rhythm. This recording is from 1985 and the sound quality is quite good. By the way, I am trying a new Marantz turntableand the sound should also be at the rendez-vous...

Continuons notre voyage à travers la musique traditionnelle béninoise et le label Albarika Store. Cet album N°64 de Boureima Houezenou présente le rythme Kpalongo. Certains disent que ce rythme est né au Ghana durant les années 70s et d'autre qu'il vient du Bénin. Peu importe, ce rythme est dynamique et hypnotique. Les voix sont denses et ponctuées par le tambour Gangan, ce que indique les influenses Yorouba de ce rythme. Cet enregistrement date de 1985 et la qualité sonore est bonne. Par ailleurs, j'essaie un nouvelle platine vinyle Marantz et le son devrait aussi être au rendez-vous...

Pozo Hayes feat. Ignace de Souza & Danialou Sagbohan (Ghana/1985)

This first album from Pozo Hayes was edited by Satel and recorded in Benin in 1985. Ignace de Souza is on trumpet and Danialou Sagbohan on drums. Here is the story of Pozo Hayes:

As a little boy growing up in Kaneshie, Nana Boake Ofori Atta, a.k.a Pozo Hayes, could not go out to play like other children. Virtually grounded by polio at the age of three, he founded companionship in radio set. His father, Aaron Kofi Asante Ofori Atta, the last Speaker of parliament in Nkrumah regime bought him a wheelchair when he was about to start school. The right armrest of that chair became the drum with which he supported his singing of trendy pop tunes at school.

At the beginning of his career, the promoter of Satel Editions invited him in Cotonou, Benin. Pozo Hayes elected to do the trip with Classic Handels and the gig was great. He recorded his firts album "Looking Over There" and since then, he has not looked back and can boast of eight albums to his name.
