Orchestre de la BCB & Roger Tchaou (1978)

Since 1976, Danialou Sagbohan becomes the leader of Commercial Bank of Benin's orchestra, the best band at the time with Poly-Rythmo's. On this record, we can recognize Sagbohan and his unique timbales style. I let you appreciate "Safia" a great "chacha rock" rhythm. Here is what we can learn today from William Arthur ("voice of the revolution") about Roger Tchaou:

It is rare that the first disc in this case a 45 rpm, makes it possible to get an idea of the talent of a young composer. Roger Tchaou, aka Roger Baba, is well known by many listeners of "the voice of Benin's revolution". Blinded from his early youth, but armed with a firm determination to succeed, Roger has become one of those artists whose maturity extends...

Danialou Sagbohan & Les Astronautes (1975)

I am very happy to share this fabulous and rare record from Danialou Sagbohan that I already presented on radio at the Mumbo Jumbo cession. You can listen here.
The band "Les Astronautes" was one of firt El Rego's band. El Rego created by the more "Los Commandos", but "Les Astronautes" persisted and recorded with other singers as Danialou Sagbohan. I must say that this record is prodigious, the genius of Sagbohan is concentrated.
First, the title "Missi Me" is a delicious afro-cuban rhythm. The brass and guitar solo caress sweet Sagbohan's voice. The other song "Mina Gan" is a piece of art, between voodoo rhythm, jazz and funk. Sagbohan is known to have recorded the first "Sato" rhythm. The name "Sato" created by Clement Melome from Poly-Rythmo is actually the common name for all different modernized and voodoo rhythms. Indeed "Sato" is not voodoo, it's a rhythm played by royal orphans inside Kingdoms of Dahomey. The rhythm is no longer played and became more popular. Clement Melome and Poly-Rythmo used this "Sato" term footprint so as not to offend the sensitive soul of Voodoo.
Like I said, Sagbohan is the first to have played and recorded "Sato" rhythm, in 1973, with Black Santiago band and Ignace de Souza. The title was "Zangbeto" (Voodoo night watchmen) and you can here "them" here. "Mina Gan" is taken from a traditional rhythm of Goun people called Kaka and which Sagbohan transfigured into jazz. A song that I particularly love.

oro

Gnonnas Pedro: "Sweet Combine"

The "Sweet Combine" of Gnonnas Pedro is a tasty blend. On one side, Spanish and afro-cuban rhythms, a B-side English and afro-beat with, of course, Mina language lyrics. A medicine to be taken morning and evening.

oro

Guehi Jean & Son Ensemble (Ivory Coast)

Also on label Badmos, a record from Guehi Gnamaka Jean, leader of Zigbilithy rhythm from Tahiraguhe. This recording is truly original and completly soul, especially the song "Essemon Moupoh".

T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo & Bylledey Guissey

Special thanks to DJ Balafon for sharing this rare album from Billedey Guissey backed by Poly-Rythmo. I have often talked about Billedey Guissey on the blog and I invite you to read the pages here. The special feature of this recording, from the early 80's, is the presence of the great Congolese guitarist Dizzy Mandjekou and the absence of leader Melome Clement. Why ? I do not know.

Pourquoi ? Je ne sais pas.

Orchestre La Dynharmonie

I want to thank Reservatory for his contribution. The "Orchestre La Dynharmonie", who had never been shown on Oro, comes from the early years of independance. The band was usually playin afro-cuban rhythms, very popular during the 60's. The "Dynharmonie" was led by H.C. Assogba. The title: "Gnon Nou De Agnin Wa Na" ("the woman I love) says: "Make up the woman you love dance the kara-kara and enjoy the flexibility of his hips".

It took several months to gather some of "El Rego and His Commandos" records on beninese label Aux Ecoutes. At the time, there was no recording studio in Benin, artists had to go recording in Nigeria. Full of spirits...

I begin with N°9, composed and sung by Daniel Martin. I do not know this artist but I love his hybrid and original song "Dignovy Din Ton Le". It sounds like afro-brazilian "samba". Title "Sur le Sable de la Plage" ("On the sand of the beach") is a slow sung in French. Note that the band is called "El Rego de Cotonou".

The N°10 is sung and composed by Charles Rodriguez. The band still has another name: "El Rego & Ses Astronautes". The title "Conseil Présidentiel" is a cara-cara rhythm which pays tribute to president Hubert Maga, father of Independence who did a lot for modern music between 1970 to 1972.

It is the arrival of prodigious guitarist Celestin Migan on N°13 that makes the band takes its final name of "El Rego and his Commandos". The songs are composed and sung by him. I particulary like "Ne m'attends plus" (Don't expect me no more) and tremendous Migan's guitar.

Number 15 is known for its soul "Hessa" composed by Behanzin A.Hendrix. This piece is sublime. The other song "Ke Amon - Gbetchea" is a slow sung in Fon language.

N°16 is also known for the song "Cholera". Both tracks wrtitten by the famous Honore Avolonto, singer and composer for other bands as Poly-Rythmo ore Black Santiago.

N°17 is also composed by Honore Avolonto who perfectly cut his teeth with the lengendary El Rego & Ses Commandos. Those last two records have been published by EMI. Personally, I love the track "Do Do Baya" and Celestine Migan's guitar flying over afro-cuban rhythms.

Moving to N°21, composed by Sebastian called "Pacheco". Title "Towe Nonvi Ku" is a great highlife arranged in a typically Beninese way. Unfortunatly, I don't have side 2, If anybody owns it...

N°22 is still composed by guitarist Celestin Migan and I must say that both songs are amazing. Migan passes from rumba to afro-beat like a monkey from one tree to another.

N° 23 is the only one composed by El Rego himself, knowing that he has recorded only height singles. "Chérie Lucia" is a bolero that prevails and "Dis Moi Oui" (Tell me on) is an afro-beat pearl sung in beautiful french. Again guitar and keyboard are tremendous.

Finally, N° 25, which was partially posted by Radiodifusion Internasionaal blog, is my favorite. Unfortunatly, I don'y have informations about the composer.

I have never heard a record as that of Ama Maiga of Mali. I don not regret paying it expensive on ebay (300 US Dollars). Ama Maïga 's guitar is prodigious, I would love to hear more of it. I only know that Ama is called "the Malian arrow". The song "Deny Tologuelen" is a masterpiece of modern African music and it was recorded in Upper Volta (Burkina-Faso) in 1975.

Excellent and rare LP from "Les Volcans" that can be described as Marxist and Leninist afro-beat. Indeed, side 1 is a tribute to socialist revolution of General Kerekou. On side 2, the song "We Messi Nu Mi" is composed and sang by a woman singer, Clarisse Alia, which is very rare for a military orchestra. Throughout the album we can recognize the traditional rhythms played in Porto-Novo.
And Captain Leoplod Ahoueya, the Force Commander, said:

Formed since 1962, the Orchestra of the Police was one of the best reams of that era. Later, he met a few years of winter and had to be resurrected in 1972.
Since 1973, the staff has been totally renovated by young elements formed in the crucible of many courses sanctioned by the CAP (Certificate of Professional Competence of music). During the year 1973, a special investment has enabled the orchestra to provide modern and electric instruments of high quality.
Undoubtable, the National Orchestra of the Police is better equipped both in personal and instruments. It probably will take place in the forfront. It is laready working. It happens. It will certainly succeed. The public will surely reserve a warm and encouraging welcome.

Robert Alognon Degbevi was what might be called "the resourceful talent" of the song. For a long time he had self-produced and sold his records on the street before his path croosed that of Jimmy Hope who will be his first producer. Nicknames the "philosopher", the acoustic guitar musician will now dry up tears. Alognon Degbevi died in February 2010. This excellent record is the first self-produced by the artist and people were very lucky buying it in the street.

POLY-RYTHMO (1976)

For a long time, I wanted to bring together the different Poly-Rythmo's recording on label Badmos. Gbadamassi Raimi from Nigeria, creator and producer of Badmos, has edited ten 7 inches of Poly-Rythmo, here are six volumes. Each numbers were composed by different members of the band. These recordings made in Ivory Coast in 1976 thanks to the Beninese musician and composer Gilbert Dossou have a distinctive and unique sound.

This record seems to be a Poly-Rythmo's prelude on label Badmos. Side 1 is a jerk and side 2 is a really interesting pachenga: "Boyi Kaka". Both titles have been composed by band leader Clément Mélomé.

No. 2 was composed by the singer Lohento Eskill. Title "Noubi Le Wede" is a pachenga rhythm and "Gbe Ho" a modernized traditional rhythm. As always the voice of Lohento Eskill transcends Poly-Rythmo's music.

N° 3 was composed by drummer Yehouessi Leopold. Both titles are called "pop". Personally, I think this volume is one of the best, especially the song "Aooida".

N° 4 was composed by bassist Bentho Gustave. The song "Alissa We Dje" is a modernized traditional rhythm. "Kossi Dagba Houtro" is an highlife rhythm sung in Mina language from west Benin.

N° 5 was composed by saxophonist Loko Pierre. The song "Djoba Gbele" is a soukous rhythm and "Oh Pierre" a pop rhythm.

Thanks to Ogoun Ferraille the rare No. 6 composed by Vincent Ahéhéhéhinou. I only have the title "Pourquoi pas" and I know you will answer "Why Not" the other title ?
Sorry don't be too greedy.

Number 7 has been composed and sung by Clément Mélomé. Title "Je suis pressé" is a jerk rhythm and side 2 is folklore's or Sato rhythm if you prefer. This record is not the best for me but as Number 6, it is really rare and hard to find.

N° 8 is composed and sung by the leader Clement Melome. Both titles are called "special pop", an obscure term that more defines a modenized traditional rhythm.

The last was composed by Gilbert Dossou aka Prince Dgib's and sung by Lohento Eskill. It is the one I prefer. The "pop" atmosphere is great and for the first time on a Poly-Rythmo's recording ("Salowa") you can hear the gangan drum or talking-drum.

Seven Brothers Egun Band (Nigeria - 1978)

I think "Seven Brothers Egun Band" is a traditional music band of Badagry, Nigeria. This region was occupied by Dahomey (Benin) until the 19th century. It is largely populated by Gun community, a community deeply rooted in Benin. This album recorded in Nigeria in 1978 is therefore in the tradition of Beninese music. The music of Seven Brothers sounds like Yedenou Adjahoui's of Benin but with more binary arrangements and closer to Yourba music.

Sam Fan Thomas (Cameroon - SATEL 110/1977)

Sam Fan Thomas of Cameroon is a famous singer and guitarist who became known in 1984 with his album "African Typic Collection" sold more than one million copies. He began his solo career in 1976, traveling and recording in Benin like many other foreign artists. He will record a second album in 1980 on the same label Tropiques Satel backed by Black Santiago Orchestra. You can consult this album here.
I have no informations about the backing band of today'album.

Daga H. Georges & l'Orchestre Black Santiago (1976)

Daga H. Georges, also called Doctor Senan, has composed for Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and the Black Santiago. This record is really groovy, it would fits in any event in the world. It is also thanks to the master-arranger and sax player Ignace de Souza. Also note that the singer of  I thank Samy Ben Redjeb from Analog Africa for posting the record's cover at a recent sale on Ebay, so I can post a friendly illustration.

Pynasco & Les Volcans (1975)

Sebastien Ahouangnimon, called Pynasco, is a singer and composer who began his career in 1973 with Poly-Rythmo orchestra and Discafric Band. He composed famous songs like "Zizi" or "Mi Hlin Migan". He recorded on this 7 inches, with "Les Volcans" orchestra, two fabulous titles. On side 1, "Affou" is a fabulous afrobeat tune, and on side 2, "La Vie" is a singular sato tune. African modern music is condensed on this record edited by an obscure label: "Palais du Disque".

Houndeffo Anatole (Alokpon)

In the great tradition of Tchinkoume rhythm, Anatole Houndeffo called Alokpon brings us another record on the label Akiyo & Fils formerly AVA Promotion. This album from Alokpon is not the best but it will delight fans.

Stanley Murphy (Ivory-Coast)

I found no informations about Stanley Murphy. If you have some, please send it to me. This album was recorded in Ivory-Coast and I do not know what else to say...
