Pretty old record of the Black Santiagos led by beninese trumpet player Ignace de Souza and recorded in Ghana in 1965. "Pretty Little Angel"is a twist rhythm and "Augustina" is a highlife.

Negro Jazz de Cotonou (1965)

Let's discover a new beninese band on Oro, the Negro Jazz de Cotonou, typical orchestra of the independence period influenced by Afro-Cuban and highlife rhythms. The leader of the band is  Mathias Malaya. For me, this orchestra does not represent the golden age of beninese music but it remains an interesting discover.

Orchestre ELECTRO-SUCCES & Orchestre NATIONAL JAZZ (1965)

New beninese band from the sixties, Orchestre Electro-Succès. The composer is Leon Houéssouvi and I discover the music as you.
The other side is played by National Jazz band, another band much more successful.

Orchestre Daho-Melo (1965)

Here is a new orchestra on Oro, the Daho-Melo which is one of the oldest band of modern music in Benin, the same generation as the Picoby Band, Renova Band, Super Stars de Ouidah or Sunny Black's Band. In this EP, recorded during the annual music bands festival, we find a title composed by Nestor Hountondji ("Bokonon Eh"). Hountondji is everywhere. He plays, composes or lead in many bands: National Jazz du Dahomey, Renova Band, Les Volcans, Daho-Melo. Perhaps because he was a Policeman ? In any case, he is a great artist.

As usual at this time, there are afro-cuban rhythms, rumba, bolero and a cara-cara rhythm that I do not know.

Voici un nouvel orchestre sur Oro, le Daho-Melo. Daho-Melo est l'un des plus anciens groupes du Bénin, de la même génération que les Picoby Band, Renova Band, Super Stars de Ouidah ou Sunny Black's Band. Sur ce 45 tours, enregistré durant le festival anuuel des orchestres modernes, on trouve un morceau enregistré par Nestor Hountondji ("Bokonon Eh"). Décidément, Hountondji est partout. Il joue, compose et dirige dans de nombreux groupes: National Jazz du Dahomey, Renova Band, Les Volcans et Daho-Melo. Peut-être parce qu'il était gendarme ? Dans tous les cas, il est un grand artiste.

Comme d'abitude à cette époque, on retrouve des rythmes afro-cubains, Rumba, Bolero et certain cara-cara, un rythme que je ne connais pas.

Orchestre Renova Band d'Abomey (1965)

Renova Band were part of the the 60s scene in Dahomey (Benin). Together with Super Star de Ouidah and Orchestre Picoby Band among others, Renova Band formed the first generation of modern music bands in Dahomey, mixing new genres like rumba, cha-cha-cha, salsa and jerk with traditional and local elements. The leader of the band was William Basile and one of its member, composer and singer, was the famous Nestor Hountondji (leader of the "Volcans du Bénin"), who composed "Dada Sagbo" and "Bonne Année". This EP is the first from "Discafric" label and it was released in 1965. After those first recordings, Renova Band life will be transformed by the arrival of a new member. Avec d'autres comme Super Star de Ouidah, Picoby Band ou Dany Band, Renova Band reprend des rythmes tels que rumba, cha-cha-cha, salsa et jerk et y intègre des éléments traditionnels et locaux. L'Aube Nouvelle: Marches militaires Dahoméennes (1965)

Benin (formerly Dahomey) celebrated its 50 years of independance on August 1. I think it is interesting to discover its anthem, recorded in 1965, by the Dahomey's national military band. Thsi record is politically rich. On side 1, "L'Aube Nouvelle" (The New Dawn), anthem of Dahomey, was composed by a Dahomeyan catholic priest, Father Gilbert Dagnon. On the other side, the title "Dada Segbo" was composed by the king of Dahomey himself, King Glele. Two opposing worlds on opposite sides...

Le Bénin (ancien Dahomey) a fêté ses 50 ans d'indépendance le 1er Août. Je pense qu'il est donc intéressant de découvrir son hymne national, enregistré en 1965, par l'orchestre de la Gendarmerie Nationale du Dahomey. Ce disque est politiquement riche. Sur la face a, "L'Aube Nouvelle", l'hymne du Dahomey, a été composé par un prêtre catholique Dahoméen, l'Abbé Gilbert Dagnon. Sur la face b, le titre "Dada Segbo", a été composé par le roi du Dahomey, le Roi Glélé. Deux mondes qui s'opposent sur deux faces opposées...

Les Revenants de Ouidah

1965, still on Discafric Label, here are the "Revenants de Ouidah". The "Revenants" are ghosts. They are called Egungun in Yoruba language and Kuvito in Fon language. They represent spirits of the dead who come back, hidden from head to foot, to communicate, in words and music, judgments or councils to the living people. The Egungun belong to secret societies and not to a Voodoo god. Becareful, Touching a Egungun can cause your death !

Toujours sur le label Discafric, voici "les Revenants de Ouidah". Les revenants sont appelés Egungun en langue Yoruba et Kouvito en langue Fon. Ils représentent les esprits des morts, qui reviennent masqués des pieds à la tête, afin de prodiguer des conseilset des jugements aux vivants. Les Egungun appartient à des sociétés secrètes et non à un dieu Vodoun. Attention, toucher un revenant peut causer votre mort !

Super Star de Ouidah (1965)

As we already know, the Orchestre Super Star de Ouidah was one of the oldest modern band of Benin. Bentho Gustave, the bassist of the Poly-Rythmo, began his career in this formation. The two main composers and singers of the Super Star were Pascal Medagbe and Joseph Tao. They sing Bolero and Biguine songs on this EP recorded in 1965.

Comme vous le savez déjà, l'orchestre Super Star de Ouidah est un des plus anciens groupe moderne du Bénin. Bentho Gusatve, le bassiste des Poly-Rythmo, a fait ses armes dans cette formation. Les deux principaux compositeurs et chanteurs des Super Star étaient Pascal Médagbé et Joseph Tao. Ils chantent sur ce disque, enregistré en 1965, des titres d'influense Boléro et Biguine.

Sunny Black's Band (Poly-Rythmo/1965)

This is my third post about Sunny Black's Band. Created by Clément Mélomé in 1965, this orchestra will become in 1969 the famous Poly-Rythmo's orchestra.

In this EP, the Side one, a cara-bouche rhythm from Congo, has been composed by Honoré Senahun. The Side two, a pachanga rhythm, has been composed by Nicolas Gomez.

Orchestre Picoby Band (1965's Festival)

Orchestre Picoby Band from Abomey was created in 1953. Abomey is the capital of Dahomey's Kingdoms. In 1965 the band participated in the first national music festival. They arrived third, just behind another great band from Dahomey: Anassoua Jazz Band. This 7 Inch is a recording from this 1965's festival, which took place in Cotonou. Super Star de Ouidah (1965)

Returning to Africa by the Mono sound Of Ouidah and the gate of No Return (Ouidah, in the Mono region of Benin), is the twin-town of Salavador de Bahia in Brazil). The Super Star of Ouidah was one of the first orchestra of Dahomey. Super Star from Ouidah was also the first band of  Poly-Rythmo's bass player Bentho Gustave. It seams that he is not playing on this record composed by Houedanou Sebastien and Behanzin Paulin.



Retour en Afrique avec le son Mono du Duper Star de Ouidah et la porte du Non-Retour (Ouidah dans la région du Mono, est la ville jumelle de Salvador de Bahia au Brésil). Le Super Star fut un des premiers orchestres après l'indépendance mais aussi le premier groupe de Bentho Gustave, le bassiste du Poly-Rythmo. Il semble qu'il ne joue pas sur ce dernier ne joue pas sur enregistrement composé par Houedanou Sébastien et Behanzin Paul.

Sunny Black's Band (1965)

Another rare realese by the Beninese group out of which emerged the Poly-Rythmo. A single composed by Clément Mélomé featuring a jerk on side A and a bolero on side B. I Think this single was recorded in 1965.
