OUSMANE KOUYATÉ & Les Ambassadeurs (Mali/1984)

After "Revelation 82" that you can find HERE is great afro-funk "Kéfimba" recorded in 1984 with famous orchestra Les Ambassadeurs.
Very young, Ousmane Kouyaté is passionate about music and learns balafon and guitar. In 1978, he met Kante Mafila offering him to join the orchestra Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux, founded with Salif Keita. Ousmane took part of the recording of all the albums. He began his solo career in 1982 with: "Revelation 82" (1982), "Ousmane Kouyaté & Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux" (1983), "Kefimba" (1984) and "Domba" (1990).

Tohon Stan: King of Tchink System (1984)

Stanislas Tohon is definitely the king of Tchink System (modernized Tchinkoume rhythm) with its famous Gotta drum and water percussions. Tohon is singular as his music. He is like a thug.
He delivers on this album a third version of "Yallow", a hit that mede him known throughout Africa (you can find the original recording in this post). I especially like the track "Gotta" and the violence of all the drums.

Souradjou Alabi & His Akpala Music (ALS 133)

After Dossou Letriki, let's continue our journey through the rhythms of Benin and the label Albarika Store. This number 133 presents Souradjou Alabi, master of rhythm Akpala. This rhythm, which is common in Yoruba people from Benin and Nigeria, appeared in the twentiest century. In Nigeria the master of Akpala is Ishola haruna. Recorded in 1984, this album preceded that of Miguelito. Both have the same back cover, a picture of the football team "The Dragons of Porto-Novo", and both pay a tribute to the team through a song.

Dossou Letriki (ALS 139)

I found a dozen of rare records on Albarika Store label, all traditional music recordings. I Propose to explore them chronologically but in reverse order. I also suggest you to discover all the different rhythms that have populated the kingdoms of Benin's music.
We start with the number 139, recorded in 1984 and which rhythm is called "Egoun" (See illustration and for those who have forgotten the Egun's story, see these pages). The author and orchestra's leader, Migbogohin Assogba Dossou aka Dossou Letriki, has the status of Yedenou Adjahoui's student. He plays a fetish rhythm from the people of Port-Novo, the "Masse-Gohoun". Adjahoui was the king of this rhythm and when the king died in 1995, Letriki became the reference. In march 2010, the student joined the master. He leaves behind children and women, and about thirty albums. Letriki is coming back today with this nice quality sound recording and melodies haunted by the spirits of Egun.

Orchestre Les Volcans & Miguelito (1984)

One hand on heart, lying on a car like a dragon on the roof of the world, Miguelito says goodbye before the occurence of a fatal road. The picture is prescient, three years after this album, Toffo Hossou, called "Miguelito", died along with Ignace de Souza, on the way to a concert.
We retain of this anthologycal album, the sublime tune "Yemakpego Dragons", a tribute to the football team "Dragons" of Porto-Novo. The title "African Tchango Jam" is also a tribute to the african radios and the "Voduns" of Benin, with their musical power as Oro...

Mamadi Diabate (Mali/1984)

Mamadi Diabate was born in Kela (Mali) in 1946. He began working as a tailor during the sixties in Bamako where he started playing guitar and singing. Unfortunately, his career was short. He recorded very few LP's, one in 1985 with Kante Manfila and the Ambassadors and this one in 1984. He also recorded with Ousmane Kouyate on a record you can fond here.
